We certainly found it perfectly adequate however you need to have a Z3 with factory fitted roll hoops.

I know that the fuel consumption is worse but I will only be doing 7.5k miles a year at the most in this car (my 118d's for the daily commute). Welcome to the forum. My suggestion would be to test drive both derivatives before you make a decision.
As far as running costs, there isn't really much of a difference between the models (even mpg), possibly insurance costs of the 2.0 will be better on the wallet though.

Are you using a premium petrol like Optimax?
Are your tyres at the correct pressures?
