What a great question ! When I was a kid we, courteousy of my old mans fascination with birds, had a toucan that sat on a perch in the living room and every now it frightened the s**t out of me by letting out an almighty sqwak. The toucan,s name was BarneyBoko. later in life i researched the name to...

With a heavy heart, I have decided to part company with my beloved Zed 3. The reason ? I now work away from home and the Zed is now almost permanently holed up in the lock up. This is unlikley to change anytime soon and I believe that this car should be getting enjoyed every day. I have had it for t...

Despite the claim that the box is sealed for life, you will find many on here, including me, that have had it drained flushed and reloaded. Because it has this claim (sealed for life) on the maintenance schedule you often have to strongarm your friendly mech in to getting it done. However it does ma...

Thanks Silver, thanks Frank Great feedback I had the chance to take the Zed out on some treasured routes today and can definitely say that like for like I can make progress swifter than I was with the Dunlop sports. It feels miles away from the edge and I am encouraged to go look for it, or possibly...

New set of F1 Eagles feedback
So after much deliberation, gnashing of teeth and advice from the forum, I bit the bullet and got a set of Goodyear F1 Eagles fitted to replace the much admired (by me) Dunlop Sports. As usual you go looking for a difference and your mind plays all the the tricks. So I have a quantitative observatio...

I am about change the boots on the Zed, I have had it just over two years and with only 30k on the clock I think they are the original equipment. They are down to about 3-4 mm and at the weekend I was sliding about a couple of times, so mind made up. Whats on is the Dunlop sports and I am hoping to ...

High mileage doesnt seem to be a problem, as long as they are looked after and as most owners are enthusiasts, the zeds tend to get better attention than most people give their kids. You will see many owners on here who use them as their everyday car, are in the 90k region or above. The flipside is ...

What is my Zed worth
Looking at a car for my better half, the sales guy assumed I was trading in the Zed and offered me £4700 ???? Once I had wisened him up he told me that his valuation was straight from Glasses Guide. I cant really believe that this is the going rate. Anyone got any other benchmarks ? 2001 facelift, s...

Seatbelt ache
I hope that I am not alone in this observation, it relates to the driver seatbelt socket (female side). It sits up pretty high and the angle caused by the normal belt tension causes the belt "pass through" buckle, to dig in to me, not painfull, but uncomfortable. On inspection it looks lik...

I bought one from a guy on here, it really finishes off the car. Hoewever getting it on and off is something else. Thats now a month since I fitted the braided clutch hose and changed the gearbox oil. I have done in excess of 2k miles in that time having had it on hols and driving back and forth from the NW to Scotia, probably the first time its been driven every day. I can conclusively say there is no improveme...

Johntt To be fair I did not feel that the clutch operation or the gearchange was that bad before the oil and cable change, but at £20 quid for the cable it was as well on. Fluid Exchange
So last week the dings got fixed and this week the potions were applied. The engine oil was changed to a fully synthetic and after some arm twisting and advice from learned members of this forum, I eventually convinced the mechanic to change the gear box oil. The rest of the fluids are pending. Oh a...

Gearbox to fill or not to fill
Took mines in for its summer check up, I got the oil changed and had a braided clutch hose fitted. I also asked the mech to drain the box and fill with some Millers fully synthetic 75w 90, that I had supplied. I got the call to pick it up much quicker than expected, only to find that he had not chan...

Snake oil, bagged a bargain
I spent half a day looking at threads on engine oil and gearbox oil, eventually my eyes glazed over and I lost the will to live. Waking up this morning still not knowing what to buy, I started to mentally distill the information, much of which is contradictory. Oil is a passionate subject and you ne...

Another braided hose query
I have trawled through all of the available discussion on the benefits of a braided clutch hose and where you can get them, but one question never seems to get answered unequivically. Does one size fit all ? Mines is a 2.2 facelift, I dont know of its an e50 or an e54 or a whatever. Can anyone say i...

I am about to have all the fluids replaced and have been looking at the reccomendations, which are extremely helpful.
But to the diff,,,,,,, is it conventional or limited slip? Apparantly (says the sceptic) it makes a diference as to what is best.
Mine is a 2.2 facelift 2001
Thanks
Barney

Seat belt covers / pads
My seat belt rubs against the right side of my neck, which can be irritating. I am thinking about a couple of those pad thingummy,s that go around the seat belt and on the shoulder. All of the ones I have seen are of the cheap and nasty variety. Anyone seen anything better?

Taking the Zed for a weeks R&R in Norfolk at the start of August and I want it looking its best. Took it to the local body shop for an estimate, to have all the car park dings and the ones that I have inflicted over the past year, sorted out. The main effort will be the front spoiler which I wha...
