Yes that worked. A spray of WD40 and a firm yank downwards and out it came. Tyre is quite flat - I didn't realise it can be inflated from the back of the car without removing it. The extension tube which enables inflation can be the reason for deflation as it leaves the tyre valve permanently open....

I have Avon ZV 5 on mine (no longer available) and quite happy with them. I don't use the Z in winter so I only know about summer use. It's my second set and I also used them on my Morgan.
I've never worn them out but change them every six years or so.

I have a 1.9 Auto and find it perfectly adequate, I would entirely agree with Tilly's comments having owned and enjoyed mine for around 9 years. Having said that however if "adequate" is not what you are wanting, maybe look for a 2.8 or 3 litre, both of which I think will have a Steptronic...

The boot loom was the culprit with me and not all breaks in the same place, I would strip back the outer cover a bit further and see if any more breaks.

I had some weird central locking issues a couple of years back which I found was due to the boot loom (where it goes from lid to body) as Robert suggests.
It looked perfect but on stripping the outer cover back there were a couple of broken wires.

Looking at this the pins look much shorter than on mine.
Just wondering if they have been shortened at some stage as they don't look long enough to reach the mountings.

Whilst hearing the noise try gently pulling on the handbrake, if the noise stops it will be the handbrake mechanism as Joycey says.
Speaking from personal experience the rear mounts noise is more noticeable with hood up rather than down.

I would suggest you check the age of the tyres, anything more than about 6 years and they get a bit hard.
Sounds like there's a possibility they are a lot older than that and if so you are quite correct, they will be trying to kill you!

Mines never ever been out in snow or ice and being a Japanese import has never seen grit or salt. I'm sure if fitted with winters as Tim's is it would perform well enough but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Mine has a plain bumper, no side marker lights, the side lights being in the form of an extra bulb set in the headlights.
Maybe a replacement bumper from a later car has been fitted and the side marker lights not connected up to come on as sidelights?
