Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I think from your posts, i'm looking at an electrical fault, rather than a component. Probably not get to investigate untill the weekend. Will keep you posted, and if anyone else has had similiar problems, i'd be glad to hear of them.

When my brake caliper 'siezed', the brake pads were being applied to the disc. This is what caused the steering shudder. Unfortunately, at least here in Northern Ireland, if the steering is deemed to be too heavy, it's an MOT failure. I have a Z3 3.0i, and the steering is heavy on it. I hope to fix it, just as soon as I found the cause.
