You are 100 % correct about the poor pump design. I have looked at alternatives, but thus far not found anything which would be a simple replacement.

Re: Before you blame the Sender..

The pivot of the arm is what allows the contacts to separate, and since the float gets stuck in a position where it keeps those contacts from connecting, a zero reading happens. If the ceramic card is just cracked, it will break the circuit too and give a zero reading.

Re: Cheap solution fuel gauge problems

I think you may have missed the problem. That arm as you will know now, cannot be bent very easily. It's very strong. So, I would remove the pump again, and check the the plastic housing to which it is attached, has been clipped in properly. There are 2 points where it clips onto the main body. They...

Considering the problem, I would simply drill a 0.5mm hole in the cap. It will be more than adequate to avoid the vacuum issue.

Re: Cheap solution fuel gauge problems

The problem of the broken ceramic card. First off is to remove the fuel pump unit. Once out,you will notice that the float arm swivels on a plastic tapered pin which passes through a plastic housing. Gently move the arm back and forth to check the amount of play in the pin / housing. It is likely it...

Now here's a thing... The M52tu intake cam can be directly replaced with the M54 3.0 or 3.3 cam. This isn't as radical as the ZHP cam, but a heap cheaper. The M54 exhaust cam is identical to the M52TU cam, so no point going there. I have done the mod on my M52TU 2,8. It provides aprox 1mm more lift,...

I recently did an EWS upgrade on an M52TU. The problem was that every so often, the car would crank but not start. After some extensive research I found that the EWS unit fitted to the M52TU / E36's and E46's had a sort of glitch in the program which resulted in error code 209 and the above mentione...

Other than the above advice, you may want to check the IACV - Idle Air Control Valve. This item on the 6 cylinder models is fitted to the intake manifold below and slightly right of the DISA. It is a very simple piece of equipment, but it has a sliding shaft in a tube type valve system. It gets dirt...

The greater the overall mileage, the more frequent one should do oil changes. Genera...
