Just to sum up - I changed the rear springs and pads yesterday without problems. One spring was broken with the other OK. So if anyone has a use for rear spring from a 1999 1.9 it's yours

To provide an update and hopefully a final note to this issue I had the guy that looks after my paintwork clean up and rebond the quarterlight glass to the frame. It's neat job and up to now (fingers crossed) - problem solved for £30.
