sounds like the water pump to me, impellor spinning on the shaft when it has to do some work, ie when the pipes are all coupled up again. Not an uncommon failure either. What does the temp guage do? yes its a possible but the flow and return hoses to the heater matrix are very hot!! so i think the matrix must be partly blocked
