A similar size tyre is available which is 125 85 16 which is 5.5mm bigger diameter so will still fit in the carrier or 125 80 16 which is 7mm smaller in diameter. My 1999 2,8 only has the small tray behind the bumper.
I would imagine that the bigger engines require more cooling and a bigger tray may restrict the airflow through the radiator. Possibly not too much of a problem in the UK but if you were heading to a warmer area it may be a concern.
