2.2 to 2.5?

Just floating the idea... There must be lots of the 2.5 M54 units about as they are NOT the 3.0. Does this go straight into the 2.2? IF you had the skills and kit it seems a relatively cheap way to get 20hp and a bag load more torque from displacement? Gets to keep the nicer gearbox and something th...

Re: M52 vs M54 vs N52

Amendment to the original thread ... I've just started looking further in to the lineage of the 6cyl engine and go to the N52 which replaced the M54. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52 Some interesting 'improvements' here being the magnesium alloy block, variable valve lift and the variable lengt...

Cam swaps

I've just come across an old thread where Mike Fishwick mentioned swapping in a 3.0L inlet cam - I presume he has/had a 2.8 at the time?

viewtopic.php?t=25765

My query is which M52/54 engines have similar cam and which ones are suitable upgrades for which other models?

Is this of any significant benefit unless you are chasing the large torque of 3.0+ ?

Re: M52 vs M54

You would need to re-sleeve the cylinder after boring it out. Not sure how practical that would be? Keep in mind, that you will need to sort out the ECU (DME) to match the new engine capacity. Several options are available: - Re-map the fuel trims in your existing ECU, Will take some trial and erro...

Re: M52 vs M54

Thanks guys My underlying idea is to take a 2.0 M52TU and look to bore out to 84mm or so to accommodate the better head off the 84mm units and then locate the suitable crank to get it to 2.4 or 2.5 hopefully then keeping it revvy like the short stroke 2.0 (would be crazy to just do 84mm bore on std ...

M52 vs M54 vs N52

I'm just wondering, forget actual power differences, what are the actual differences / benefits v Between the two engines. For example, I understand the M54 is fly-by-wire, but is this actually a real world benefit? I remember going to my first fly-by-wire car and the throttle felt rather odd compar...

Re: Limited Slip Diff Observation

Out of interest, I'm still interested in getting a 2.0 Cosmos special edition at some point - does any body know if these had the Torsen LSD (or any other type of LSD)? I can't imaging that some did and some not being a special.

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

I had assumed that anyone who seems as serious as you seemed to be about a 2 litre Z3 would have had a good poke around one and have a decent knowledge of the basics, rather than just kicking tyres via the internet - I was wrong again! The 2 litre engine is the M52TU B20, the 'TU' bit denoting a Te...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

If you did manage to extract 170 bhp or more from your 2 litre engine, there are other things to consider - the gearbox is different from 2.8 litre upwards - a ZF unit as used on the M3, front brakes are vented, clutch, radiator, expansion tank, and exhaust system are different, and so on. Then ther...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

ok - so after spending hours trawling the net last night I'd like to throw some ideas about to see what confirmation comes back. From what I can gather the engine in the 2.0 6cyl is the M50B20 - correct? That being the case then there seems to be some possibility to some mix-and-match with block / h...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

I,m selling my 2.0ltr m sport shortly to fund a car for my 17yr daughter, silver with two tone leather. Thanks - I have identified a couple of special editions that I like the colour combo's so will sit and wait. I dont necessarily need to do it this year if the right one does not turn up. (no offe...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

2 litre engine was fitted mid production run and replaced by the 2.2 litre at facelift (approx mid 1999), when the 2.8 was also replaced by the 3 litre. If you are more concerned with finding a Z3 in good condition with low miles a facelift (as late a 2003 reg) could be your best option. Even an ol...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

The 2.0 is adequate for fun, although if you can find a 2.2 this is the better option. As for the 2.8 and or the 3.0 - big is not always beautiful and if you need that much power by a Boxter. After all the Z3 is a "Roadster" - a cruiser, not a "race car"! All the "improveme...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

Put a 2.8 motor in and sell the 2.0 one. ok - this is sort of where I'm angling towards... I have seen that certain combinations of engines seem to be interchangeable due to the fly-by- wire. is the 2.8 the best direct swap in this instance? is it literally just the engine or would there be gearbox...

Re: 2.0 6cyl tuning options

Thanks for the responses. I knew that there were some options on the old E36 323 for relatively inexpensive increases but could not find anything on the 2.0. I'd rather have a minter than the power as i have a 300+bhp car for that side of things but I was wondering if the 2.0 was even adequate for t...

2.0 6cyl tuning options

HI, I'm considering a 2.0 6cyl mainly because of the condition rather than its the right engine. What are the options to get the 150bhp up to beyond 170 and towards 200? I see some engines benefit from a intake manifold swap and remap - does this apply to the 2.0? What options are there for capacity...
