I'm visiting there tomorrow. I even had a quick PM off to Damon to see if it wasn't the same issue he had (search for a long story there!) Basically, its definately top end, and to expect to pay 1500+ vat to strip down an engine, and to be told "They've got not idea" is a bit of a piss tak...

Its definately top end rattle, my local (non bmw) garage, and a tappet specialist have told me... by the sounds of things, BMW want to strip it right down!

Oh dear god..

Just got off the phone with BMW, they've got no idea whats wrong with it. And they'd like to do a strip-down, the cost?

£1500 + VAT !!!!

And the worst case scenario...? A new engine, on top of that...

I'd get your engine looked at asap. I recently changed the oil in my S50 ///M for some Castrol Edge 0w30 and it has began rattling, I changed it back to 10w60 yesterday, and it remains. It sounds like something is been thrown about in the tappet cover, I would describe it like having a few flails on...

Its already been done once, and this one should be under the 3 year warranty from the garage, but I know what'll happen. If it is this again, I'll probably get the the whole -

Its the "EDGE" oil thats suggested on the Castrol website. And its the Edge 0w 30 thats in it now.

The stuff I've got from the local BMW place is Castrol Motorsport 10w 60 and on a label it says - "Exclusively approved for M3, M5 & Z8"

Just dropped the car off at the garage, it drives perfectly quiet until the oil warms up!

on the wall of the garage, they had a poster on the wall for choosing oil, and that one suggested 5w 40 !

The ///M sounds like a bag of spanners when started from cold, but soon quiets down within a couple of seconds.

I think its a characteristic of both Hydraulic Tappers and Straight Six engines... I've been told to listen to a TVR Speed Six starting cold if you want to hear it bad!

Peel the carpet away from the pedals, theres a grommet that goes through there straight into the engine bay, which will let you run a cable nicely to the jump-start point :)
