Re: Poor car!

I have a vague recollection that in some European countries people were forced to register previously unregistered Z1s because emission regulations were getting tighter and it was no longer possible to register "old" cars after a certain date. That could be problematic with this car, at least in the...

Isn't there some trick about resetting the door controllers? Pull the fuses and leave them out and then raise the doors? Seem to recall something along those lines from Michael.

No, the Z1 is too old for OBD. It has a diagnostic connector in the engine compartment for a BMW specific diagnostic tool.

The tabs in the panel that hold the switches are quite fragile - be v careful swapping out the switches lest you need to replace the panel as well.

It all smells a bit funny. First there's the similarity in the ads. Then one set of wheels is listed by a seller with a feedback rating of 333 which just happens to be the feedback rating of winning bidder of the other set. And the winning bidder of the first set of wheels has a feedback rating of 1...

It'll be worth less money to a purist but more money to an enthusiast. Probably not much of a market outside the UK due to the difficulty in getting it registered.

It's filled from the same reservoir as the brake fluid; the feed is usually taken from a level such that a leak in the clutch circuit won't take so much fluid out as to influence the braking circuit.

I think that if you move the seat all the way forward, raise it as high as it will go, tilt the backrest forward and remove the battery compartment cover (the two door control units unclip) you should have enough room to extract the battery. I don't recall having had to take the seat out.

Might be worth having a read of http://www.z1z1.de/technik/technik/lenkung.html

And the Z1 has fairly slow steering (4 turns lock to lock) which doesn't help the perception of on-centre vagueness. Soft control arm bushes can also contribute to the vagueness.

The New Forest is a beautiful area but it tends to get rather busy in the summer. Combining that with sharing the roads with various grazing animals and 40 mph speed limits in areas it doesn't make for a good area for "spirited" driving.

Smaller wheels = less unsprung weight = better handling. The only (partial) exceptions are 3 piece racing wheels that are very light but also delicate, both in terms of kerbs and potholes and corrosion from road salt. Big (rear) tyres are generally only need for big bhp.
