What chassis number is your car? From memory early cars used a normal 6 cylinder diff but with a different rear cover (easily swapped). Later cars (perhaps when the E36 production came on line?) used a different diff that's harder to find. Reading a German forum it seems swapping in a 3.91 rear diff...

That's most unusual. All I can think of is a fluid leak that led to the internals doing a coffee grinder routine on themselves. Normally they wear gracefully till old age and then you might get some slop or whine with time (sort of like people really!).

I presume you mean the diff or do you mean a drive shaft (from the diff to each wheel) or the prop shaft (from the gearbox to the diff). Any which way 50K miles is early.

Try a site like www.bavauto.com and look for knob that fits a 1990 325i and then try to find a UK source for the knob.

It shouldn't be too difficult. The diameter of the shift lever is fairly large but many knobs come with various inserts and then use set screws as well.

I think it's simple to convert a Z1 to Euro II via a black box but the current Euro III standard is probably not achievable without major expense.

For some info on the standards see http://www.haguidetofreight.co.uk/General/id94.htm

But Is that due to not being registered before the emissions laws changed? As this must have the same engine as all the other Z1's? Yes, it's almost certainly the same engine as every other Z1 but the problem is trying to register a car with 1991 (or whatever its build year is) emission levels and ...

If you search on www.mobile.de you'll usually find several low mileage (kilometerage ?!) Z1's. But the prices tend to be very high. In the above mentioned auction there's the German text "Hinweis: Aufgrund der Abgasvorschriften kann das Fahrzeug in Deutschland nicht mehr bzw. nur mit Ausnahmegenehmi...

Chris, Many thanks for the diagram but even it isn't terribly clear. I've never seen anything like it in a radio before. Basically, the trick is to remove the trim in the left side of the passenger footwell near the knee. Then look inside the console behind the end of the radio and there will be the...

I still can't seem to find any release catches; they must be well hidden! The car came with a user's manual for a Sony XR-7302 which looks to be identical to the BMW Z1 radio except that it has the handle to remove it from the sleeve. I'm guessing the rotating the handle helps release the radio from...

how to remove original BMW Z1 (Sony) radio

Any advice on how to remove the original BMW Z1 radio? There's a piece of trim around the sides and the bottom that goes where the handle would go if it were the removable model but I can't figure out how to remove it after that. Removing that trim piece exposes two horizontal slots on the sides of ...

early vs late Z1's; any significant differences?

I'm looking at Z1's and some are as early as 89 and others as late as 92. Given their overall age I'm well aware that general condition is most important but are there any significant differences to look out for between early and late cars?
