The question asked earlier in the thread by mrluke regarding the noise of a fan running when starting first thing in the morning caught my eye. The answer is its is an air pump that forces fresh air into the exhaust side of the engine to lower emissions on a cold start when the engine will run rich....

To get underneath mine I run the front up on a pair of car ramps, mine just has enough clearance to get it on the ramps. Same for getting under the rear.

No, white, they are the cars sidelights not turn indicators, the cars indicators are housed at the edge of the headlights under an amber lens.

You don't need a power supply to run diagnostic code readers, they get their power from the diagnostic sockets they are plugged into.
If you use a laptop with software diagnostics on it then the laptop mains cable can be plugged in to power the laptop if needed or just rely on the laptop battery.

Could have sworn when I did it last year a couple of days before the month end it gave you a choice of either taxing from the current month or from the coming new month. Got to do mine for May 1st, been checking daily to see when it will take payment for 1st May.

Looks like a good project car that only needs a good clean and a bit of fettling to get it back to a good standard. Nothing in the Construction and Use Regulations pertaining to Badge Bars, don't confuse them with Bull Bars that were fitted to 4x4's and considered a danger to pedestrians. Yes washing with a natural soap soloution worked for me, used soap flakes in hot water. The belts get dirty with grime and oil from hands and this causes problems when they recoil. A good wash and allow to dry will probably sort it. Pull the belts out to their full extent and jam them so you can was...

Al Its a bit of a wrestle getting the arch liners out, once all the screws are out I found it was best to drop the inner edge down and then use a screwdriver to spring the outer edge down and out from the outer wing edge being careful not to damage the wing edge when doing it, same for the front alt...

Quite right check for air leaks or a bad MAF, these will upset the lambda sensor. If you need a new sensor stick with known make such as Bosch or Siemens same goes for replacement MAF. Too bad it wasn't the switch, sounds like the others are correct suspecting the alarm causing them to flash.
Bonnet switch sounds a possibility, strange the siren isn't sounding when they flash.

I would check the hazard switch sounds like it might have developed an internal fault, disconnect the switch and try a known good one to see if that solves the issue.

Change the gearbox oil, check what yours takes, some use ATF, may be a label on the side of the gearbox unless its fallen off over the years.
BMW used fill for life fluid but a change is worthwhile to freshen up the box, gear changes will be smoother after a change, do it and see what you think.

Door threshold trim clips and some replacement self tappers for the sills and arch liners to replace a couple I broke when cleaning and waxoyling the sills. Also renewed insurance £141 fully comp no extras wife as named driver.

It is as the others have stated a signal amplifier, it has a 12v live feed to it so care needed when disconnecting or connecting the unit. Yes always use axle stands usually leaving the trolly jacks in place as a back up. If I am going to crawl underneath I use a pair of ramps to get the car high enough, always feels safer than the axle stands.
