Is there access to the motor connections that are fed by plug 2, try bridging those connections at the actual pump. while your there check continuity of both the wires back to the plug to check neither is broken. Do the same with the wires from plug 1 to the micro switch to check for breaks and oper...

Is plug 1 going to the micro switch or is it plug 2?
Have you tried bridging the connections in plug 2 ignition on foot on brake pedal?

Glad I have a manual roof less to go wrong.

Same for me bit the bullet and bought at BMW Dealers, tried after market via ebay and very quickly learnt the lesson of only using oem parts.
Hope your exhaust sensor is a known make I replaced mine with Bosh from Europarts, not cheap but worked correctly first time.

Best look for a trusted indepedant BMW garage to do the job if you can't do it yourself.Sytners obviouly don't want to know it's not rocket science to diagnose and fix it moving parts are the cause and only a few to check out if it's not the belt pully's its. The timing chain or the tensioner

Make sure the pedal pivot is free from dirt and small stones that get carried in on shoes, hoover any debris out from around the pivot and then lubricate with WD40 or a spray lubricant like GT85. Look at the throttle cable at the connection on the throttle body, adjust the cable by adjusting the cable guide it passes through turning it out will pull the cable tighter and adjust the tic over speed. I like the ramp level extensions, storage is the only problem unless you park the car on them as well.
The ramps with the jacking pad seems the better soloution for storage.

If you have a decent anchor point how about using a 12v winch to get the car up the ramps?

Personally I would change the oil before putting it away no contaminants left in the engine to fester away, also put it up on axle stands so its off the tyres completely. Door locks should be ok, if you disconnect the battery bear in mind you will need your radio code and the ecu may well reset itse...

Bung a code reader on it and just check for any codes, all the sensors getting old on it now and ripe for playing up as are the rubber hoses and pipes, give it a good going over.

Give the code reading a go at least it should show some misfire info which may narrow the faulty cylinder(s) down.
Swapping the coils for known good ones is the way to go without codes to go by certainly sounds as though something is breaking down.

Al Not sure it would reset itself with battery disconnected, some one will be along to answer that one I'm sure. As you had the throttle body off double check all the hoses for air leaks, that could be a reason for rough idle. Plug your code reader in to see if it's set any codes which may be a clue...

+1 on Roberts advice re connector to use for airbag work, when you get your airbag reader/reset tool you need to use the pacman socket even if it comes with a OBD2 plug, obviously need a round to OBD2 changer cable. Run from Betws-y-coed back to Newport today only spotted a metallic blue Z3 with chrome side gills at Cwmcarn 10 miles from home just after I was pulling out of a lay by putting the hood up because of the rain, was it you?

Could be due to an air leak, as you have had the head apart recheck all the air hoses are sealing with their hose clips and none have holes or splits. First check the drain tubes at each side of the hood pivots are not blocked, previous posts on these. Give them a good polishing using Brasso or Silver polishing fluid, probably best used with a small electric mop, cheaper than a kit and good results, I have used the method on motorcycle screen to get rid of scratches with good results.

Regarding your seat belt not retracting very well, pull the belt out to its full extent and gently shampoo the webbing and rinse, leave it to dry then see how well it retracts, have solved this problem on a number of cars by doing this, the webbing gets dirty and becomes problematic when rewinding, ...

Don't know what mileage you have covered in seven years but its somewhat overdue some fresh lube in it, you will be amazed at how it feels after a change.

I change mine every 2 years and mine is very low mileage summer use only.

Have you changed the gearbox oil? Despite BMW saying filled for life a change is always worth doing it usually transforms gear changing.

Be aware some gearboxes use ATF others oil, label on gearbox indicates which if its still attached.

Someone will nbe along regarding the worn pins question.

Chaps are right solid discs on the 1.9 if you changed to vented that would require new calipers and a lot of fiddling.

Hi only down the road from you in Rogerstone, got INPA on a Laptop, Airbag Reset and service light reset. Also run Engine Check Pro on a Laptop and Dash Command on an Ipad or phone.

OK the high mileage would lead me in the direction of worn valve guides but you say no smoke when you have been followed, if it is valve guides you are more likely to see smoke on the over run when decelerating as oil would be passed by the valve stems and burnt in the cylinders. Have you checked to see if it has set any codes which might point to dodgy sensors causing misfueling and bad emissions?

My guess would be Maf, and or exhaust sensors or cat contributing to bad emissions.

What mileage has it done?

Can you read the codes, doing so may well narrow the fault down, if either sensor is bad you should get a code set.

Get the AA man to check the output from the alternator if he manages to start the car, if the battery is flat he will probably jump start it, when running he should be able to see what the alternator is putting out. It does sound similar to my bad alternator problem which was low output and running ...

To check the alternator start the car and put a voltmeter on the terminals to see what voltage reading you get, with a good alternator you should see in excess of 14volts as it charges the battery. Use the meter to test the battery without engine running and see what state its in good would be 12v +...

I noticed the diagram also shows a plug and washer alongside the temp sensor could it be that some cars didn't have the sensor and the plug was used to blank the hole off? If this is the answer then it would only leave the one on the radiator which is a dual sensor
