I cant get a good finish either, so unless you want to spend hours on them, all I do is to apply 1 touch of paint and 1 touch of clear varnish this seals the damaged area so further deterioration is stopped, then eventually take it to the painter and get the lot done professionally, you could fit a ...

Unless you are a perfectionist why would you want to polish a clear coat of lacquer assuming that it is in good condition? [If you are down to the basic paint then that would be different]
otherwise a wax should be all that is needed providing that it is applied frequently :? .

Gday srvz3, A cutting compound certainly removes some paint, it does this to get rid of imperfections and give a smooth even finish, some polishes may also do this. Sure, but this will happen what ever you use, You spend heaps getting a near perfect finish, then after say 4-5 days motoring you have all the gunk etc back on the top, a good tough wax will help protect, but nothing will prevent it.

If the plastic is scratched you will not get rid them by polishing, you would actually have to reduce the surface of the plastic down to the same level as the lowest part of the scratch, depending on how deep the scratches are the likelihood of doing this is just about zero.
