Regarding oil types, I came across some info on the net that said for double vanos engines it could not be recommended strongly enough that LL01 just had to be used, [unfortunately I did not record the link], such as edge, softec or longtec in the castrol range with the tappet operation you mention ...

Mike, For the 3L, and I assume the 2.8L would be the same I thought the M54 tappets were mechanical not hydraulic?? But on checking found this description [Valve drive Cup tappets with hydraulic valve play compensation] So I assume you adjust as normal with shims but what is meant by compensation???...

As Deano1712 said above it does look like they were overtightened, the bolts still have some aluminium in the threads, don't disturb it. take your present mileage and don't drive any more, over here the consumer would be fully covered, I guess you would be also. if they have used loctite this would ...

There is an old saying “its not speed that kills, it’s the sudden stop at the end” Now you get a sensible mature fellow in his/her Z doing 130-150k/hr on the motorway, a considerate driver, with great anticipation and perhaps 25 -40 years experience, and in every other way a law abiding citizen. I've applied the BMW reproofer, the Z has been out in the sun drying and now its back in the garage but the cloth has a slightly sticky feel. Is that usual? Not when it is dry. Done mine twice, now due for another effort, you must clean first and proofer much easier to apply if hood is damp, never ...

I agree Robin, I really do not understand what all the fuss about empty oil filters is about, It seems all theory and no practice.
