How to help stop rear screen splitting?
I was warned about this by an ex-BMW mechanic when I first bought my Z3 and I’ve seen one or two posts on this site from owners who have unfortunately split their rear screens. I’m no expert when it comes to these soft rear screens and wondered what can be done to help stop the problem. It seems to ...

Re: Hi- finally some piccies
Hi Peter - not sure if I saw the post on Sunday either. Most of us were probably out with the roof down getting sun-burnt. Looks in good nick and not one of the common colours like my own Arctic Silver/black seats. I totally agree with your plan to get the mechanical basics sorted before moving on t...

Re: What head unit was the Z3M shiped with?
You can request an original "vehicle specification enquiry" from your local BMW dealer. This will be a print-out that shows what it was supplied with when it was new eg "BMW business RDS" or "smoker package" etc Like you I had a rubbish non-OEM 1990s Sony unit in mine w...

Re: CUTTING OUT AND STALLING
I agree, cutting out and stalling at low revs can be one symptom of a cam sensor problem. A failed crankshaft sensor often causes the complete inability to start.

I had this same problem when I was after a new fuel cap rubber seal, so I emailed BMW Direct who operate via Ebay and they were able to check some master BMW computer and provide me with details of the two BMW dealers in the UK who still had stocks of the part in question. I rang the first one on th...

Re: STARTING PROBLEMS
My opinion would be a dead battery. The alarm system is triggered when you disconnect the battery and I reckon your battery became "disconnected" in that it went dead. The weather has been a tad colder in the evenings the last few days and colder weather will often be the final death blow ...

Re: Hello and Gutless 2.2
A perished/broken rubber boot between the MAF sensor and intake system is a very common fault. As zed carer has pointed out, it causes extra “unmetered” air in the system which will lead to a weak fuel mixture and lack of power. It can cause starting problems and rough running as well. I’m probably ...

I agree peterandjenny! Most of us have come up against over-tightened oil filters, sump plugs and wheel nuts etc. I didn't realise the sump plug was hollow and will get a spare as a bit of preventative maintenance. Thanks for the warning.

Beautiful car and low mileage but perhaps a bit over-priced. I fell in love with a 2004 Alpina Roadster S 3.4 (Z4) last autumn, which had slightly higher mileage but was a bit cheaper than this one.

Re: M Power badge?
From what I see on this site, members are sticking all sorts of “non-standard bling” on their cars. I neither see a problem with that nor with youngsters who cannot afford an M model but who aspire to have one. Ebay has literally hundreds of sellers offering “M” badge bling and so it must be popular.

Mannesmann 12v oil scavenge pump
It’s probably me getting too old but the thought of fiddling around with jacks, stands and blocks twice a year to change the oil on the Z3 is losing its appeal. I came across this 12v Mannesmann Oil Scavenge pump on AMAZON and elsewhere. All the reviews sound very seductive e.g. “changed my oil in m...

Hi I assume you’re talking about item 8 on the diagram. This is sometimes known as a DISA valve (termed adjuster unit on the diagram). Briefly, it has a metal flap (valve) inside that moves, on a spring loaded spindle, to adjust airflow inside the manifold. It is wired to the ECU and is activated at...

Is your fuel filler cap seal perished?
Noticed by 13-year old rubber seal was badly perished and close to breaking up. Discovered that the seal can be bought separately (part number 16 11 1 179 680) as I didn’t fancy buying a whole new cap presumably with another key. My local dealer told me they did not have one in stock and that the pa...

Hi sapper1592. I have done a lot of work/research myself recently in respect of a cold rough start issue. I agree with Mike in that if the rough idle problem is SOLELY related to the first cold start of the day, then the cause is most likely to be a vacuum leak. As Mike says, the most likely place f...

I don’t know your precise model but I would say you require something like fully synthetic 5W-40 engine oil. You can do a check on the Mobil and Castrol sites. Many drivers have strong views about oils and brands and so I wouldn’t be as bold as to recommend a particular brand on this site. Personall...

Hi Mike Welcome to forum. I acquired my Z3 (1998, 1.9 M44 engine, 17 inch wheels) last June and I have been working my way through a small list of renovations to get it back to original condition as far as is reasonably possible. The things I’ve encountered are:- • Tram-lining - seems to be a common...

On a car that has had the other basic service items done i.e. plugs, filters etc., in my opinion further problems confined PURELY to the first cold start of the day are likely to be caused by either vacuum leaks or a failing MAF. After those, I agree a CPS could be a culprit. On your 2002 car the di...

I have just replaced the footwell ones in my 1998 M44 Z3. I agree with wonderloaf, they are 5inch/13cm. My old ones weren’t that good and one of mine had “blown” also. Update for Tibs and any other interested members with the 1.9 M44 engine. Diagnostic equipment was just giving a vague misfire code on ...

Would be very interested in the outcome. Have a very similar problem on my Z3 1998 (1.9) M44 engine. So far have changed plugs, checked HT leads and coil,...

Front strut brace & rough cold idle 1998 Z3 M44 (72k mil
Hi I am a newbie member having picked up my Z3 this spring as an early retirement hobby/toy. Firstly what seems to be the fairly common problem of a rough idle on cold start only, for aroun...
