It is well worth getting the spare out once a year or so, just to make sure that the fasteners will undo easily and the wheel cage thing is not stuck.

Changing a wheel is hard enough after dark, but the Z3 makes it a real mission.

Get some old carpet or similar to protect the sills and centre console. Its easy to scratch em. Remove it in daylight with the roof down. Also be careful when lifting, the seat is f/heavy. 1.9 Turning Over - but won't fire

Went to get our 1.9 out of the garage on Sunday, only to find that despite cranking well, the engine wouldn't fire at all, not even slightly How does one test for a spark these days ? Haynes advise not to remove and touch plugs to ground the old way, as ECU damage will result BTW to my shame the car...

My guess is that a seat failure (hands up the lucky ones!) could make the car difficult to drive.
Throw in the alarm and various battery drain issues and it could easily piss off a lot of owners...

My seat up/down started moving again only after removing seat from the car, (being careful not to rupture oneself) laying on its back and connecting a 12v supply to the motor.
Was fine after that

I'm convinced the 'footrest' is just a block of foam.
When I unscrew the plastic clutch stop from the floor and wriggle a thin rod under the carpet towards the gearbox, it just slips under the 'footrest' with no resistance.
Now how do I lift the carpet without loosing the bonnet release cable ?

The Z3 rear bottom locker is ideal for a Sat Nav. Just drop it in and turn up the audio !

Rather than start a new thread, I'd thought I'd just add to this one. Has anyone had their carpet out to see what the footrest bulge (under the carpet) is actually formed from ? It feels soft like a block of foam, I just wondered if lifting the carpet and hacking it away, then pressing the carpet do...

I have a similar leak but via the O ring at the base, however I found that it was impossible to separate the expansion tank from the rad...
If I can't detatch it, I will have to resoert to radweld :oops:

(Z3 1.9 update) FWIW, I removed the air inlet trunk, undid the large plastic screw holding the screenwash bottle and managed to push the bottle back (without draining it) enough to gain access to the RHS bulbs. Not a job I'd relish doing on the roadside though !

Another reason for playing safe by disconnecting the battery, is to avoid the pyrotechnic seatbelt tensioners detonating.
OK, I know it shouldn't happen, but if it did, you would't want to have your head down there....

As you know, even the seat motors are still live with the key out

very unlikely, even if you took off the pedals, a full size road bike is still 40" x 25" approx plus a bit to turn the bars/fork. I can't even find a folder to fit the Z3

Have a search on here possibly an alarm/immobilser fault, in the meantime to test this out, can you leave the car unlocked in a garage for a day and see if the battery still holds its charge ?
A slim possibility is a 'hunting' seat motor, with the motor failing to stop turning

If you don't have a built in thermometer, you could get a cheap one battery from Maplin and leave it in the car.
However I'm a coward, and would err on the side of caution and use 5 degC as a threshold

IMO the Haynes US manuals should only be used for background information. There is not enough detail (and a few descriptions are just plain wrong) in order to succesfully do much work beyond the basics.
