I'll bet it's the water pump.
Take a short piece of garden hose and use it as a stethoscope. You should be able to locate the source of the whining.

The second time was simpler....52 minutes door card to door card.
OK a week later - so must have been the actuator.
BTW - the OEM actuators are manufactured by VDO

Re: Hands-free remnant removal and head unit fix - help need

Fine - but I don't see how accessing the back will help.
If you really have a problem understanding what is interfering - build a clear box or a frame the shape of the head unit (even one of the frames that support head units without the unit inside) and push it in.....

Is there a reason you cannot pull out the head unit to see what is interfering?
On mine I need to push the back end upwards to get it to fit.

Try removing the yellow connector (two contacts inside connector) under the seat and spraying with contact cleaner - works for me and often need to do it a couple of times before getting a good contact.

Well a lot of help you all have been... Upon inspiration from another creative zedder - I luckily found a rectangular analog wristwatch which seemed to be a perfect fit to modify an old defective Z3 digital clock '98. The watch face is 38mm high and 36mm wide (Q&Q Quartz model #VR30J002Y) eg htt...

Here is a discussion - but I expect is only for facelift? as the analog clock PN 62138383663 is not suitable for the rectangular opening of the prefacelift. https://zroadster.org/threads/how-to-change-the-digital-clock-into-analog-clock.2590/#post-48493 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-2002-BMW-Z3-ANALO...

Can someone advise what analog clock is a retrofit for the rectangular digital clocks in the preface-lift console?

Ok - thanks for the inspiration. I did it once - it'll take under a couple hours. What was you mode of failure - I'm still trying to figure out if it's the actuator or the latch assembly beneath it. Tale of a Z3 fuel sender unit gauge (300k km)

As most know, there is a Z3 gremlin where the fuel gauge becomes erratic. Years ago it was diagnosed as gunk on the copper surface of the gauge “potentiometer”, where contact is made with the floating arm. The fix documented by a BMW bulletin was to replace complete sender unit for “complaining cust...

Here is a tip to overcome the difficulty everyone encounters when replacing the window guide. Remove the rubber window seals. One can then clearly see the position of the window guide from above, and it's then easy to slide it upward in a clockwise motion into place.

It's quite hard to get access whether you remove the door card or not. But if you give a very generous douse of silicone spray and or WD40 -it should release for an extended period (12 months). Obviously if it's just a stuck solenoid.
