Agree with Johntt.
5 series wheels have a smaller offset so will stick out more than zed or 3 series wheels so spacers will make it worse.

I think it needs to be on a ramp as the diff has to come out.
The bush is in the diff but the bracket the diff is bolted to is on the underside of the car, ( I said to the subframe before but meant the body ) and this goes both sides of the diff bush so it can't be accessed in place.

Can you tell where the thud is coming from rear or centre of the car. Probably is the diff mounting bush from the diff to the subframe. The flexible coupling is propshaft to rear of gearbox so would come from centre of the car. Have a look for any cracks in the rubber or movement in both of these .

If you use the rubber mallet don't have your head/face too close as the hammer may bounce back at you off the tyre. Clean off both the inside of the wheel and the spigot on the hub and small amount of copper grease.

The plugs are under the cover that runs down the centre of the cylinder head not to one side. The plug leads run from the black box (Coil pack) around and under the cover and are quite well buried into the head. A magnet is useful to lift the plugs out if using the bmw box spanner.

Hi Patty first thing is to check you have some fluid in the reservoir. The fluid is pumped round the system when the engine is running. Check for leaks from the pipes to the steering rack. The bungs on the rack aren't drains but part of the rack. Here's 3 ways http://www.dvatp.com/bmw/power_steering...

The front radiator/condenser is just to cool the compressed refrigerant and like the car engine cooling system the fan will only run if there is insufficient cooling from the air flowing over the condenser. ie the fan will only run when needed.

I split the outer ball joints the other weekend using a hammer on the side of the arm, this doesn't damage the rubber boot. The inner ones are more difficult to hit whilst the car is on axle stands. The fork type splitter just needs a solid hit to work.

If you can unbolt the tank and lift it out you will be able to see more clearly whether it is leaking from the joint in the pipe or the actual tank. I doubt if you can buy the 'O' ring separately but some engineers shops may have one. Eurocarparts have them for 39.54 http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/...
