Mine had gone in the transition from where it leaves the body and then enters the boot lid. I believe this to bethe common area of failure due to the continual flexing at this point. It will also be made worse if the cable has comeout of the clip by the hinge - the hinge acts as a rather blunt guill...

Would not take any risks with an oil filter. There is a brand name on one of the components in the photo but you need to know the brand and spec of the one you will get. If you're bending it...don't kink the pipes...if you fill them with oil and plug the ends with kebab sticks, then bend them, it will help to avoid any kinking. I bought my M44 thermostat from a BMW main dealer in November 2011 and paid £39.50 plus VAT. So your price looks OK. Help! LED push button cover and spring have gone AWOL from my centre console, probably now in waste bin via vacuum cleaner. Cannot find part number on realOEM - probably there somewhere but I cannot find it. Can anybody spot it or better still advise where to get one?

My '98 1.9 passed today with no advisories.
It is un-modified apart from Cobra Sports exhaust. There was nothing I knew of which was of concern, but have felt that way in the past and have ended up with a few massive bills.

Washed mine today, straightforward Turtle Wax and Shine shampoo. Also did wheel arches and water jetted underside. No time left to polish but during drying off inspection have `gained' a lot of swirl marks that need attention - busy time ahead.

In the dear old Haynes Manual there is a Cautionary Note when checking fluid level which says `DO NOT hold the steering wheel against either stop (extreme left or right turn) for more than 5 seconds - If you do the pump could be damaged. My initial thoughts would be to look at the boot wiring loom, the loom once faulty can cause all sorts of peculiar symptoms. Agree totally - had all sorts of permutations with ours working then not. Definitely am not an expert but Haynes Manual says engine should be warmed to normal temp and steering operated back and to several times to free any air prior to check. Engine should then be shutdown - unless you want to risk a few digits in the fan!

If it was ok when you put it to `bed' in November then it's probably nothing that a bit more `exercise' will not cure. Would suggest you run it and if it doesn't calm down then have engine codes read before you start throwing money at a `maybe' fault.
