I always find it easier to connect under the bonnet. For one thing, if you feed the wires through the small gap just to the front of the wheel arch (near the black plastic liner), you can close the bonnet and lock the car.

Taking it out once a week should be OK, but if it's longer than that I would get an Oximiser (rather than an ordinary charger). Don't forget that the security system alone - assuming you leave it alarmed - takes quite a bit out of the battery. Which country are you in?
