Made a call to BMW in Vannes. Very nice response and between my bad french and their bad english a new cable will be available on tuesday next week. They need to get it from Germany or UK as they only hold LHD cables in stock. I should be back on the road next week.

No idea on the outer diameter as just cut to fit. Basically it is about 6mm smaller than the knurled wheel on the vent. Outer diameter is not such a problem, its the inner diameter for the hole. You can take off the jets and clean by inserting a broom hair into the very tiny jethole. Alternate method is to junk them and go spend a few pence at the stealrs. Thats the best and easiest option.

I agree. Leave it connected and run it occasionally. Note that the alarm may not be active if you disconnect the battery. If the car is stolen the insurance might get picky as they usually do.

Service Plus in redhill is worth a try. They just did a great job of sorting out my 2.8 blown head gasket. Very pleasant to work with and Gary who worked on my car knows his business.

Just gone through the same problem on the same cylinder. Head gasket blew, pressurized coolant system and blew top hose. Drove home this afternoon and the whole car is much better than previously. Regarding increased compression ratio I doubt it will be noticable as only 16 thou was removed. Don't expect the ratio to change from 10.5 significantly but I could be wrong. If anyone can calculate the change I'd appreciate...

Update on progress. Head striped and been off for inspection and reskim. Needed to take 16/1000 off. Head back now and looking good. Rebuild of the head virtually complete and awaiting a few moments to clean up the faces, bung in a new gasket and bolt everything back together. Hopefully this weekend...

I agree with Mike. I use PVC tape rather than the bespoke bits of plastic as they clean off very easily.

HI. I had the same problem a few years back. I just went along to the local BMW garage in Brentford where the service guy just opened his desk and gave me a new zipper. He had a pile ready. Also no charge. Worth a try at your local dealers I think.
