I would guess £2K getting you 200-210 bhp. The recipe is
M52B28 crank
spacer for crank nose
M20B20 con rods
new rings and bearings
deck block by 0.5mm
mild cam
ECU chip
some hard graft

Might be worth having a read of http://www.z1z1.de/technik/technik/lenkung.html

And the Z1 has fairly slow steering (4 turns lock to lock) which doesn't help the perception of on-centre vagueness. Soft control arm bushes can also contribute to the vagueness.

The New Forest is a beautiful area but it tends to get rather busy in the summer. Combining that with sharing the roads with various grazing animals and 40 mph speed limits in areas it doesn't make for a good area for "spirited" driving.

Smaller wheels = less unsprung weight = better handling. The only (partial) exceptions are 3 piece racing wheels that are very light but also delicate, both in terms of kerbs and potholes and corrosion from road salt. Big (rear) tyres are generally only need for big bhp.

The Z1 uses the same radiator as the 530i and 730i (big six engines) of the era. If they supply a Behr or other OEM supplier product it should work just fine.

Just a data point - eurocarparts lists a rad for £102 but no mention who it's from.

Testing the throttle position sensor is a good place to start. Shamelessly nicked from elsewhere: At the bottom of the throttle housing, there is a 3-pin connector. Sorry to hear of your continued aggro with Z1s. :( Insist they use the right plasticisers (sp?) when they respray it else the "stiff" paint on top of the flexible one will craze over time and/or it will stone chip like mad. A cheap respray will age very quickly.
