No damage to the bore or cyl head? The bit of debris looks bigger than the chip out of the piston. If I had the engine that stripped, I would have balanced all the components +/- 1g (BMW tolerance is +/- 5g). Do Geoff Steel offer that service? I am not sure an oil sample will tell you much at this stage since you do not have any previous reading to compare with. Oil samples work best when done over time and a trend can be seen. It drives well and is quicker than my S50 but that is the only positive thing I have to say about it.

The diff bracket isn't the main fail point although it does happen, the main weakness is the spot welds of the crossmember to the bootfloor/chassis rails. The lack of spot welds around this area and directly above the bracket lead to generaly metal fatigue and eventual failure of the few spot welds...

Thanks for all your replies, some very interesting takes on this.

Just to add, I changed the pads this year and did have a sticking caliper afterwards, but that has now been remedied.

As for driving style, I dont use it for going to the shops, only for driving as it was intended on long fun runs.
