It's not too bad a job to do if you're methodical and keep track of where things plug in. As already mentioned the actually physical removal of the console is the fiddliest but; from memory once all the screws are undone, you lift the back up then unhook it from the dash and work it off the handbrake.

Yes, it's the larger allen bolt on the front of the VANOS, if the oil is always clean it doesn't really need changing very often but work a look; you just literally unscrew it and the filter is part of the screw itself.

I'd say it's the vanos too. What oil have you used? Most S50s will do this, especially if the oil is hot and the engine has been idling for a while. I use Castrol 10/60 Edge M Series and it definintely seems quieter than anything else I've used.

The Z3M always had clear indicator headlights from 97/98 but from 4/1999 on they got chrome rings around the headlamps.

The Z3 had orange indicators but got the same chrome ringed clear indicator lamps from 2001-on. But all are interchangeable.

Looks good! I've had a few E30 diffs and all the 6-cylinder 8-bolt casings in this fitment as the same so all the backplates are interchangeable, there seems to several different styles but onl yhe Z3M has the much bigger pronounced fins.

I would definintely recommend changing the brake pads if nothing else and get them properly bedded in before the day. Unless you are lucky (and sometimes it happens) the OEM setup just wont last more than lap before the pads wilt, fade and judder and you'll have that for the rest of the day and week...

A taller tyre like the 255/40 will in theory make the speedo read slightly slower, the reality is the speedo is DEAD accurate with this size fitted. My car was within 1mpg of a GPS at all speeds well in to 3 figures.

255/40 are fine in all conditions and a popular tyre size to go for on the rear 9" rim as road tyres at 255/40 sit quite well and only slightly taller over the 255/40

The arches are big enough to take a 265/40 too but it is noticeably taller/chunky so gearing slightly altered too.

A 265/40/17 will fit on the rear rim but it will look massive and not just in width - it will look very tall too and this makes the rim look smaller relatively.

Go up to 255/40/17 max but I prefer the look of the factory 245/40.

Not following your logic at all. With a larger roll bar it is the diameter that grows, it's not like a footprint. The forces are at the contact points of the body and trailing arm brackets. The bigger roll bar is contained within a bush that is essentially the same size that fits in the same bracket...

If your pump is fine then perhaps just try a breaker car/ebay for the pump? it is easy to swap the fuel pump out of the cradle/sender.

I've doubled up spring pads before, from memory the top pads are easier to doulbe up as it incorporates a bump stop which you cut out of the 2nd pad so it fits over. On the bottom spring padthere isn't enough height on the locating part to double up.

I recommend using AMSOIL MTF, available from OpieOils, the shift is much smooth and lighter with this oil.

I didn't think Earls do brake hoses! I know most people tend to get Goodridge which can be bought off ebay. It's the one time where the Z3M is cheaper than it's non-M couterpart as there are only 4 hoses on the M vs 6 hoses on the non-M!
