I struggle to understand how it could be economical to repair/rebuild that car. There's lot of things that need replacing that we can see; they are surely other things that we can't see (wiring and connections, engine, brakes and tyres just for a start). A good Z1 (with a known history) can be bough...

From memory early cars had steel front control arms and ali rear ones and later cars are just the opposite. The diffs are different as well. I can well imagine that the rear suspension of later cars shares lots of parts with the E36 as their production dates overlapped. Early cars were using more un...

My post was about the fact that my red Z1 has a clear coat; I didn't think German companies used clear coats on non-metallic finishes until the mid-90's. I would offer you might want to think long and hard about a respray for stone chips. I obviously don't know what your car looks like but a respray...

You can buy these from German suppliers ( http://www.duw.de/shop/(e4am43jug3iw1ff ... x?ID=24457 ) for about €52 (£37) shipped to your door; that UK supplier selling them for £63 is taking the proverbial a bit.

If you look carefully at the lights there's a bi-directional arrow in amongst the lettering and certification info; this indicates that it's the same light for UK and continental use. In the owner's manual there's a procedure to change the side on which the beam flares up. No stickers should be nece...

Apols if I'm telling you what you already know... The mechanicals on the Z1 are a good example of parts bin engineering which helps keep running costs down. But the chassis, body panels and most of the interior are bespoke. Many pieces are still available from BMW but the prices are quite dear when ...

On the subject of brakes though, I am hugely impressed by the amount of speeeeeed you can actually carry into a corner when pressing on in the Z1. The grip is absolutley fantastic. Z1 paint - clear coat?
I was surprised to find the Top Red paint on my Z1 appears to have a clear coat; this is based upon using a mild polish and getting no stain on the polishing cloth. Other red German cars that I've owned of that era quickly stained the polishing cloths. Any comments?

I would imagine 60% more horsepower and 50% more torque would make a Z1 quite lively. But unless you're into stoplight grands prix or track days the other bits of the car should hold up fairly well. Staying with a stock clutch might be an idea so that it acts as a fuse to save the gearbox and diff i...

My story is the opposite. In the Z1 I get smiles and waves and on petrol forecourts people stop to look at it and ask what is is and comment that they've never seen one before.
