Flying Scotsman's inaugural run will be from King's Cross to York on Thu 25 Feb 2016.

I am thinking of chasing it from Stevenage to York.

Anyone else fancy doing the same?

The train leaves King's Cross at 0740 and arrives in York at 1230. It normally takes around 2 hours for the train to do this journey, so Flying Scotsman will be bimbling at less than half the speed of the normal train. This means we can overtake it several times.

I've chosen Stevenage as it is after the Hertford Loop Line and I don't know which side of the loop the train will take. North of Stevenage, there is only one way to York.

I may start from Grantham as it's nearer to Nottingham.

I'll post timings if anyone is interested.

Blast I'm on duty in the afternoon so can't go on the run, but might have time to see her steaming northbound at some point east of Loughborough/Melton, where ever that might be....got any clues Pingu?

Start Here

I should see it coming in time to get ready to follow it along this little B road for about a mile

a bit of driving will get me to this bridge

a level crossing

another bridge. This time viewed from underneath.

Finally, watch it as it slows down to come into York. I'm hoping the ramp in the circle leads upto the railway

It's very difficult to get timings until very close to the day. I've assumed that it is non-stop from King's Cross to York direct up the East Coast main line (http://www.uksteam.info/tours/trs16.htm).

Stations east of Melton that it will go through are Peterborough, Grantham and Newark.

It's running from Carnforth to Carlisle tomorrow (6th Feb). Here are the timings. I chased the Duchess of Sutherland on that route in 2006, but it would be harder to do now because the A6 is closed at Eamont Bridge (Penrith). I'm going to spend the next hour or so working out whether I can do this run with virtually zero notice  .

I have no evidence for any of the following, so you use my guesses at your own risk  .

I strongly suspect that this is a link to the timings of the train...

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U ... 5/advanced

Trust me, it has taken quite a lot of detective work to find this as there are no links to it from anywhere else of the internet.

My first point of contact will be Holme Junction, where I think that it will take on water.

[edit: It turns out that this is the timetable for the chase train (a diesel), so the times for Flying Scotsman will be about 10 to 20 minutes before those quoted. They seem to be trying to keep the Flying Scotsman times secret.]
