Bullet Cam
Just bought myself a new toy as they've been recommended on SELOC (Lotus Forum) (I'm not linked in any way to this product and is purely a review)
Apparently the Veho Muvi is the worlds smallest micro dv video camera. Bought mine from ebuyer.com for £54.99 and the "extreme sports pack" from ebay which includes various fixing brackets/straps for £18.

Couple of pics how small the camera is. I'm taking the Exige out tomorrow evening to the Essex Pistonheads meet so I'll post some video after that.

Manually controlled but also has a voice/noise operated function whereby it will turn on when it hears any sound over 65 decibels.
Should have said that it comes with a 2gb micro SD card and the battery should last 2 hours which is enough to fill the card. You re-charge the camera via usb.

Just got back from the Pistonheads meet and had the camera on for the 20 min journey. Quality seems very good and no shake at all and also very clear in low light conditions. The 20 mins turned out to be about 380mb and I'm busy editing ready for upload tomorrow.

Alex the videos great, I want one!
I can put it on every time I drive to work, passing the end of Manchester Airport runway, to catch the moment that I have a Jumbo Jet inches off my bonnet...
And for the cruises too

in that case you need one of these, exactly what the doctor ordered.BBZ149 wrote:I always thought of setting something up like this on my car encase of accidents, as this would be better than any witness statement.
But it would need to auto start recording and automatically delete recordings that are a day old.

Ricco Mini DV
This appears to be identical to the Muvi, but £50 including the fitting pack.

It's also on Amazon.co.uk at the same price.

Just ordered mine from Amazon for very much the same price as Alex.
I spotted a few different brands which look to have identical cases, but there is no guarantee that they contain the same electronics, so I went for the tried and tested one.
Cheers R.

Looks the same, there's a few different branded ones on cheaper on ebay from China but I decided to go with the Muvi. £50 seems good value, although it doesn't include all of the brackets that the extreme sports pack does.Mike123 wrote:This appears to be identical to the Muvi, but £50 including the fitting pack.

Decided to save a few bucks and go for the £50 option, as I don't plan to use it often.
Arrived today (36 hours after order) - it's remarkably small, but the alloy body makes it look and feel like a quality item. I'm not expecting BBC quality.
The accessory kit is identical to the Veho, in fact the whole package is so closely matched it's difficult to believe it's from a different manufacturer.
All seems to work on brief trial.
Prodrive Day at Warwick on Friday - I'd like to get some over the shoulder shots of the skid pan/ handling circuit showing the track plus me working hard, so going to try to find a suitable location.
I'll post some results next week.

Well my camera finally turned up this morning - seems to have been delayed by post problems as Amazon said they dispatched it on Monday.
Camera is an ace piece of kit - smaller than I was imagining - and really simple to setup and get going with. Had my first little try out this afternoon and am quite pleased with the results that I can see on my PC. Two problems I had with my first try were that I had the camera pointing too far skyward and so the picture is a bit dark on the bits you want to see - when you go into a bit of road with trees over the picture is much better - should be pretty easy to sort this. The other problem is the sound - above 30 mph you can only just hear the engine note over all the other noise - I need to find some way of shielding the camera from some of it - I might try mounting the camera higher up next time and see if that improves things.
Anyway, my first, rather grainy YouTube video is here. Still sussing out how to improve the quality of the uploaded video. What I see on my PC is comparable to the vid Alex posted higher up this thread.
Thanks for putting us onto this, Alex. Fab bit of kit.

I'm attributing the dark to my pointing the camera towards an overcast sky - in any shots where there is less sky the picture is much better. I will point it more towards the road next time.
I ordered an 8gb card with the camera - £10 from 7dayshop (through Amazon) and it arrived before the camera! Just as well as my first vid was 500MB for 16 mins of video.
YouTube is a bit pants for quality, but it is okayish on HQ if you wait until it converts it.
Next try I will either mount the camera on the top of the windscreen or on the roof frame and see what we get. Should have much better sound.

Thanks for posting your reviews of the cam, where did you mount it on the Sprite ? I've been holding off buying one till I saw other reviews. I was going to get it off of Amazon like you, but from past experience they take a day or so before even posting, and after your comments I will order it from a shop in Bedford who do next day delivery and only about £2 more than Amazon
Hi Geoff, to be fair to Amazon, they are normally very quick - I think it was problems with the postal service this time, but I guess ultimately it doesn't really matter where you get it from.
Like Alex, I also bought the extreme sports kit, so I used the same mount as he used in his first photo and cable-tied it to the radiator grille. Being a little paranoid about losing the thing (there is a lot of vibration in a frog) I also cable-tied the camera to the mount and to the radiator grille! If mount it there again I will point it down a little (the mount appears to hinge).
There is a bit of guesswork in aiming the camera as of course it has no viewfinder - though you could install the webcam software and use a laptop to aim it. It has quite a wide field of view, so it probably isn't that critical - the main thing is to mount it so it doesn't move.
For my next test I want to try to improve the sound and see if I can get the bonnet in shot so that you can see what is being driven. The roof frame (without the roof) might work as I haven't quite worked out how to attach it to the windscreen frame yet.

Ricco MiniDV
This is my first attempt, both with the Mini DV and uploading to YouTube.
This is the low resolution version, I'll try higher res next time.
The sound is not great, and not worth listening to - just constant chatter when I should have been concentrating, because it's quite slippery!

I moved the camera higher up onto the roof frame (with the roof off) and pointed it more towards the road and that seems to have solved my brightness problem, however the roof frame seems to vibrate a lot, so the picture quality is not great and I really do need to do something about the wind noise. At least you can see what I'm driving now.

It certainly is. I have seen a car get airborne going over that bridge. Can be a bit mad on there at rush hour. My other vid used to be my commuter route as I used to work opposite the pub in Heatley.ALM wrote:Good shot Robert. Is that just past Ashely heading into Hale....if so, its the road I commute on.

Will anyone be trying to locate their camera midway just behind the seats ? I guess it ought to be somehow possible with roll hoops.
I'm trying to remember the opening scene in the Italian Job.
Ahhh! here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z8aLdIejPs

I will try attaching it to the top of the windbreak, not sure it will be sturdy enough but will give it a go.henrycrun wrote:Will anyone be trying to locate their camera midway just behind the seats ? I guess it ought to be somehow possible with roll hoops.

First video above from behind my left shoulder - this used the included self-adhesive Velcro bracket on to my perspex wind deflector. Without this I would have created a bracket off the roll hoop. It needed a couple of trials to get the right view - the mirror is in the way, or you don't see the road. This location is good for seeing what is going on inside the car. You can see the second location in the first video.
The second video used the right angle bracket designed to be screwed, but simply duck taped to the top of the binnacle - worked fine, and gave a better view of the road - more like a real driver's view.
I made myself a little bracket to mount the camera just above the rail at the back of the cockpit, so you can see what it is like from the passenger's viewpoint. Bracket is a little bit flimsy so there is some rather disconcerting wobble, but pleased with the positioning and you can watch my gear changes and just about read the tacho.
Sound is better, but only up to about 25mph and then all you can hear is noise. I am going to try a few different things to muffle the mic - tape and foam if I can find some - not sure if an earphone muff will stretch that far.
Same stretch of road as yesterday, but much nicer weather.

Off topic but using a 64 bit operating system means I can't view youtube clips in IE as there is no Flashplayer available yet, as far as I know, so annoying as I have to go through Google Chrome
