MP3 player to head unit link

Post by varboy »

I have read some other posts which discuss linking an IPOD to a head unit via a jack point or adapter.
I own the sony equivalent to the IPOD the NW-HD1.

Does anyone know whether this can be connected to a head unit using the same jack point as the MP3?

thanks

Hi - It depends on your head unit. BMW units don't have an auxillary input (to my knowledge), so you can't just run a 3.5mm jack lead into unit from your mp3/Ipod. However, IPods can be used in place (or possible as well as) a BMW CD changer, using the Dension ICE adaptors, I think these are Ipod only at the moment though.

After market headunits may let you connect and auxillary input (usually to the back of the unit), if your stereo isn't a BMW one look to see if it's listed here it may tell you if it has an Aux-in. Also, this link shows current headunits that are ipod/mp3 "friendly" if you need to upgrade.

I'd steer well clear of FM Modulators, horrible sounding things!

you can also try www.connects2.com who do cradles for Sony MP3 players, to integrate through the CD Changer line, or other if available.

you can also consider buying a new headunit

i upgraded my headunit for the AVX1 from JVC.
Apart from the fact it is the DB... it has a colour screen, it also plays GIGA MP3 DVD in normal english that is that you simply burn your MP3 on DVD-R (4.7 Gb = iPod Mini) and you have all your music on a disc and don't have to mess around with iPod AUX input cables etc....

JVC has a few headunits that use GIGA MP3... have a look at www.jvcmobile.co.uk

just a note that I got a connects2, sony 7750 and video ipod last week for my //M roadster....

connects2 is absolute pants.

basically takes over the ipod (can't control ipod anymore), and allows you to use head unit to selecl album OR artist OR playlist.

great you say ?

well it would be if it was not for the fact that you can scroll through your albums at a maximum rate of about 1 a second.... and you need to keep clicking + button at that rate...no holding it down... so yippee...300 clicks later and 10 minutes or so, and you finally get to ZZTop, etc.

Absolute pain in the ar$e. needless to say it's going back.

Many headunits now work with iPod, even Becker for that factory look.
