But it's all relative Tim, if it had low mileage it wouldn't be that price, the trouble is these cars are becoming collectable and that pushes the price beyond most wannabe owners..................for a lot of prospective owners the only way we'd be able to experience M power would to to take a chance on a high mileage example. I've certainly never seen one with under 50K for less than £5000 :?:

It's probably worth having an inspection done at that price - I see it's had 5 offers already! Factor in the value of the hardtop + fitting kit and that's a bargain despite the high miles, heck I'd buy the hardtop off you. The fact it's had 13 stamped services would suggest a good amount of work has been done on the car and it's seen a garage most years - although I do have 11 stamps with half the miles.

Has anyone enquired about it?

I would pay a little more for half the mileage to be honest.

Think £5k could probably be considered rock bottom these days (or perhaps wishful thinking).
Engines can be rebuilt and interiors re trimmed. I recently decided not to pass up on a spare engine. A well fettled one with only 63k on the clock. I even have a spare hood! If I had the spare cash and no wife then I would love to add another m to my garage!

Reality is that the mileage is of no real consequence....The majority of Z3's have high mileages. In fact, all things considered, by virtue of it's mileage, it will have presented all the usual mileage related issues, and had them resolved. Also, a high mileage car is mor likely to have been driven on longer distance journeys, which means the motor has operated more consistently and continually at the normal optimum operating temperature, which is less damaging than many short journeys where the motor is stop / started frequently. A high mileage travelling salesman's car is a better buy than a similar aged lower mileage car for that reason. As we all know, the greater part of wear on any motor is at a cold start-up...whilst a motor operating at it's normal running temp has little to no wear taking place. IMO. it's a good buy, and knowing the Z3 motor, it will still have at least double it's current mileage still in reserve...

The price of the car is really only around £4,000 as the seller is throwing in a hardtop. At that price you could look to spend at least £3,000 on renovation and you would still not have spent excessively. If the bodywork is straight and the car has a reasonably good service history it’s probably worth a punt if you are handy with the spanners.

Bottom line...these cars are becoming more scarce as the years go by...Worth buying if only as a future source for OEM parts.

It's taken nearly two years, but at last there's an M for sale for less than I paid. It needs a new rear window.

I'm sure it's a car I would buy if I didn't already have one. Anyone who wants an M should take the plunge, unless you find a reason not to when you inspect the car.

Mileage is NOT a problem.

I'm prepared to bet that if you lined up 10 of the Ms on this forum no-one could put them in the correct order of mileage.

Looking at what is available it does seem cheap, there is a car the same year that has 85k on the clock and already made over 6k on auction with 4 days left

I thought I would introduce myself as I am the person who hit the button ! Have been looking at this for a while and couldn't understand why it hadn't sold , so today picked up the phone spoke to the seller asked many question and got a good vibe so brought it , had one going back twelve years ago and loved it . As I done a quick deal the seller has thrown in the hardtop cover and stand ,the hard top and these items may be up for sale if I feel the need to recoupe some money as I already own a z3m coupe and a Porsche 930 . The car is being delivered next Wednesday so will start a thread on what I get then , but to be honest I don't think you can go wrong at 4800

Well done!

I must admit that I was wondering if I could have made it cost effective as a daily driver to replace my 2.0 Z3, but hesitated at the 24 mpg and the generally higher running costs when averaging 30,000 miles per year.

He who hesitates....

You need deep pockets to run an M as a daily driver.

It needs 98 octane, so cheap supermarket fuel is a no-no.

Servicing is more expensive.

Any non-Z3 spares are more expensive.

As a guide, it costs me 32ppm (26ppm in fuel only) + fixed costs (MOT, VED & insurance) to run mine.

And there lies the problem, cheap to buy now but still expensive to run for the unwary and with the mileage and age a hornets nest of potential expense. Still if its dirt cheap then you can spend the monies saved to put things right.

Had many high mileage BMWIs in the past from std m3 to a m3gt alpinas ext ext and yes you can get problems the car in question done most of its miles early in its life and has only covered average of 3500 a year for the past 5 years with the full service to back up so worth a look running cost is not really an issue as it will be third car as already own a 2000 zm coupe
And a 85 930 any m series car is a potential large bill due to its spec so always worth a thought as to if you have the money to maintain , if not I agree stay clear and avoid the stress

Anyway enough of the negative vibe I pressed the button brought the car and wish not to pass judgement on it untill I have it in the garage
Yes high mileage but have seen cars with 80 + thousand with no real history no hard top ext fetch a lot more than 4800
Wednesday will come and as I said will post a true report on the car for all that are interested

Just to be controversial, I've had my M Roadster for 4 years now and running costs are not bad. Yes partly down to low miles in recent years but I did use it for a period of 18 months or so as my daily which for me meant frequent bi-weekly journeys up and down the country. It never missed a beat!

I do my own servicing and the bigger bucks I have spent on it have been the "nice to haves". It may mean I don't have a FSH from BMW, but it is well looked after with the best parts at a fraction of cost. And tbh, FSH is a nice to have. A well maintained M is fairly evident. I'm not a mechanic, but I try my hand and luckily I have an expert friend who looks over my shoulder and gives advice when needed. Good set of tools, logical mind, a good memory and you can take parts apart and put them back together easily.

Parts are readily available too. And there are no shortage of specialists when something tricky comes about. The mostly costly thing to consider is Vanos but even now there are more people who can help with that and it doesn't cost the world like it used to.

Insurance is lowering as now some companies will class it as classic. Only have to put fuel in which probably equates to a night in the pub versus a good days worth of gas.

Enjoy the M and remember why you bought it. If a museum piece then you probably bought the wrong one. If for fun, then you can't go wrong. Especially at that price!! When it comes to maintenance, depends what you want really.

Brought to use with out a doubt and I would buy over newer cars every time if you kept it 2 years enjoyed kept maintained and then factor in deprecation on a new car I'm sure you would be in the money , one of my first BMW,s I owned was a ex demo kept it 8 months and done 6 grand in deprecation ,and I also feel that there is a point these cars can not drop anymore no matter what the miles

I, for one, am sure that you did the right thing. Even if all you do is add a few thousand smiles to the clock and sell for a healthy profit :).

Check underneath for rust as this is starting to affect the cars (a sign of age, not mileage). The parts you see are usually OK. It's the bits that are hidden that need checking. It's a 15 year old car after all.

Hi Das, congrats on your new toy! :thumb: If I wouldn't have bought mine just a couple months earlier, I would have picked this one up immediately. For ~4k sans hardtop, as you said, cannot really go wrong unless there are some very serious technical issues (i.e. engine gone, gearbox gone...). The impression I got from the ad was good, and the seller has excellent feedback, so I think you got a bargain of the century!

Looking forward for your journal thread with photos. :)

Well the car has arrived and first impression was good ,there are a few areas that are not mint but it is a 15 year old car and it was cheap.
Engine sounds as it should pulls well and to be honest does not sound or feel any different than my coupe with 83000 on the clock, history reads well and hpi clear on all counts.
body work is as expected few stone chips on the front ,small area on bottom of wing where lacquer has lifted ,front valance could do with a paint to make look a bit better already had the guy that does my paint have a look and had quote at 500 to make look mint. Engine bay clean hardtop in very good condition as is the cover and stand, wont get to look at the soft top for a while but already know has small hole in rear screen but rest is meant to be good condition, all electrics work central locking works of key fine, slight wear on drivers seat but not bad ,got my concerns with centre leather as i can not remember my other one having leather with little dots in but maybe someone could advice me on this,if they have been re-trimed in a different leather i will look out for some more or have these redone as it will drive me mad.
All in all pleased with purchase as it stands i will get christmas out the way have paint done then it will look mint stand me in 5300 so i still think it a very cheap m and a lot of fun for the money

verdict : honest car looks like you get what you see and what you see is not bad ,i have brought mint before at top money only to find they have been tarted up and catch you unaware nowadays i buy cars with there faults and all sort them out and end up with a car i know is good not just hope it is,if anyone cane advice me on the seat covering issue i would be grateful.
will upload photos as soon as i get sorted, drives me mad build a house out of nothing cant get a bloody img on a forum

Sounds like a bargain :) I've got no personal experience of the S50 engine but read various BMW threads suggesting that with regular oil servicing the bottom end is capable of lasting 400k miles and the top 250K. On that basis they could outlast the owners :D

had chance to sit down and go through vast pile of service bills ext and all reads like it has been well looked after through its life rear boot diff area was done in 2008
mileage on april 4 2011 on mot was 128910 then in 9-6-2011 in went into grosvenor motor company (independent bmw garage) and had nearly every filter gasket and bush and hose possible changed to the sum of 2462.25 so they should be good for a while.

Small world - my identical Z3 was in Grosvenor in Reading at exactly the same time in 2011 for an Inspection 2, I distinctly remember the owner of the garage mentioning the other car had an invoice for work well in excess of £2k!

Sounds a good purchase, if you do decide you want to flog that hardtop drop me a PM...

Finally got sorted on how to post pictures ,the roadster as yet still has not come up with any nasty surprises ,only came with one key but have ordered a spare from main dealer came in at 54 pounds which i thought was fare also no key fob for alarm so have acquired two just need a nice day to strip out glove box ext so can reprogram alarm .
the seats i have decided have been re-trimed at some point they look fine but i prefer plain leather in centres so i have a pair of seats coming from another member that are blue and black so i will re-dye these all black then sell the seats that are in the car ,may suit someone who wants the m seats in another z3? at the end of this i think the seats will owe me a further 150 so with the key and fobs i am currently at £5016 which i still think is not bad ,will post some more pictures when the weather is better. Also posted a photo of each of my other cars that i already had

Brought 5 years ago from a local lady who inherited it from her dad ( Keith duckworth who invented the cosworth engine) when he died, they had it for 14 years it had full service history and 78000 miles
It's a a 1985 car
The body work needed some attention so it had two new front wings a pair of rear quarters and the body kit ( for my sins) it was then repainted in the original perrisian blue
The running gear was striped and a full elephant racing street /track set up was fitted along with quick change torsion bars ,triangleated strut brace and adjustable spring plates this sits on techart Daytona wheels .
Gearbox was striped and rebuilt when out a Patrick Motorsport clutch and lightweight flywheel was fitted along with wevo short shift gear knob and psj union, this mod has made for a nice quick change
Also wevo semi solid engine and gearbox mounts have been fitted
When engine was out it was striped and treated to complete overhaul with arp studs ext
High performance cam shaft
Powerhaus heads with matched manifold and 36mm injector blocks
K27 hfs turbo, full width intercooler, performance air filter assembly
Full fabspeed exhaust including heat exchangers
Tial 46mm waste gate along with forge blow off valve
Brian leaske fully adjustable wur
And much more I have most properly forgot
Custom two tone interior
This all makes for a car that scares the life out of you can bite you in the arse as quick as you can blink.
I had always had more modern high performance cars in the past but hadn't had one for a long time so when I brought the z3m coupe back in the summer and drove it home it felt quite slow! Not that it is but the feel of the two is so different the z3m,s feel more civilised where as the Porsche is raw
Z3m coupe for general motoring when I'm not in my van
Porsche 930 for when I want to be on the edge
Z3m roadster for summer open top pleasure
The wife evoque for when the weather is s--t seems all the time at the moment

Wow that is some dedicated work and thank you for sharing its interesting history. I bet that has the ability to scare your passengers witless! I love the 930 shape so much - they're sky rocketing in price for the nice ones so I had better get in sooner rather than later I reckon.

Was doing some searching on the forum for various things and come across a previous selling my z3m thread by Ollydave back in in early 2012 , turns out to be my car supports mechanical history and paint issues also the seat situation of which I'm addressing at the moment
Was surprised someone didn't flag this before
