Selling: AC Schnitzer door mirrors (LHD only)

Post by the fife flier »

I have a pair of AC Schnitzer Z3 door mirrors in Bright Red (Hellrot) which I bought a few years ago from Germany. They are for a LEFT HAND DRIVE Z3 or Z3M. It was only when I tried fitting them that I discovered they don't really work on a RHD UK car! (You can just about see out of them if you lean across the car, but not to be advised!) Anyway, they've been sitting in a box for a few years now so it's definitiely time to move them on. They're in very good condition, and I'm selling them with the electric motors as the Z3M replacements came complete.

These mirrors appear to be extremely rare, desirable and (when they are occasionally available) expensive. If I was offered roughly what I paid for them (approx £400) I'd be happy with that. Will post abroad - cost of shipping to be agreed.

I don't seem to have mastered the trick of attaching a photo, but if you would like some, message me.

Cheers, Jim

I curious as to what makes them only for a LHD car? I assume it's something to do with the curvature of the mirror?

Their body contours are actually quite different to each other. I have a photo of the two side by side and you can see the difference quite clearly. It's probably so that the nearside one (RH on a LHD car) sits slightly forward of the other, or something like that...

The mirror glass only has a limited amount of movement within the frame, and I suspect that you can't angle the mirror far enough to cope with the driver changing from one side of the vehicle to the other to have just one mirror design. If you increased the movement of the mirror, then the glass would start to stand proud of the frame at the extremes of movement. Thus the solution BMW came up with was to mount the frame at a different angle by changing the angle the frame attaches to the base - the mirror movements will then stay within the area a driver could reasonably be expected to want to see. If you look at the left and right mirrors on your own car (regardless of whether it is LHD or RHD), you will see that that actually sit a different angles - they are not simply mirror images of one another (pardon the pun).

In addition to this, there are a couple of variations of mirror glass, presumably so that the furthest away mirror magnifies slightly to give the impression of things being the same size in both mirrors.

Cheers R.

Thanks! I didn't feel like registering for another service (i.e. Photobucket) at this stage. Glad you did though!

They fit directly onto the door using the existing holes and rubber gasket.

Its strange you tend to think you are the only
country to have Zed forum, especially with the same layout

Thanks, but I think I may have sold them already! Just waiting for the money to come through... I had thought about French or German Ebay, but foreign forums hadn't occurred to me.
