air loss on old alloys

Post by Zmeagol »

My wife has an X-registered Mercedes A Class and one of the tyres is consistently losing air. The tyre place and her servicing centre both say it's down to the alloy wheel becoming pitted over time and not providing the seal.

Other than buying new wheels, anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

You could try getting them fully refurbed, but I'd look closely at the valve.

With the tyre removed the rim can be painted with a rubber solution to seal the alloy, seem to remember having this doneon a wheel many years ago by a friend who sells/fits tyres at his garage

hi tim
the best and the cheapest way is to remove the tyre
and get a scotch pad and some water and a bit of washing up liquid
and rub the inside of the wheel.. ie where the tyre sits then get it nice and dry ..then get some clear wood Polyurethane Varnish ..a 500 ml tin is all you need
brush it all on the same area
give it two coats and fit a new valve and it should be ok

this is how it was done when i worked for wolfrace wheels a long time ago
you should get it all at b&q this link is what the pads look like
