New Exhaust for the Zed
After months of putting it off, both for financial reasons and indecision, I finally got round to getting a new exhaust sorted for the Zed.
Having got a quote for a new cat back system for BMW (I really should have known better), I decided that it would have to be a stainless system from one of the 'custom made' suppliers that I have seen advertised.
I was initially looking at MIJ Exhausts in Walsall, but have read some less than complimentary comments on other forums on the net about them and eventually decided to go for a Powerflow system.
Having had two previous cars fitted with Powerflows, I had a fair idea of what to expect, but as they are franchises and both of the ones I had dealt with previously had closed down, it really was a question of sticking a pin in the list of local franchisees, which is how I arrived at Topgear Exhausts in Aylesbury yesterday morning.
The car was lifted on a ramp and the fitter cut the old system off. We then discussed how I wanted the new system to sound and he showed me the extensive selection of tailpipes that I could choose from. I settled for something similar in appearance to the original and asked for it to sound fairly standard to slightly sporty but definately not too loud.
I wandered round to Mc D's for a coffee, Halfords, to take advantage of their BOGOF offer and Tesco's for some lunch and a read of their free newspapers whilst I was waiting and wandered back to collect the car about three hours later.
They were just finishing the car off when I arrived, so I was shown the work and they explained what had been fitted and what to expect, then I parted with £350 and drove home.
At low to medium revs, the sound is fairly much as standard, as requested, but when you give it the berries, it develops quite a hard sporty edge to the exhaust note. At cruising speed, the sound is not intrusive and overall, I am pleased with the result.

I thought that I would add a couple of shots of the old bus as she looks now, complete with the beige hood cover that I managed to get off eBay some time ago. There is still some work to do, but overall I am quite pleased with the way she looks.

Powerflow might be the route I take as I'm holding off a Supersprint or Hamann as the tailpipes are 76mm and worried they might scorch the bumper Also I'm not keen on chopping the existing BMW system to fit a back box as the BMW exhaust is all one piece upto the manifold. I'm guessing with the Powerflow I could go with a rear and cat section thats bolted together as they should be than a botch sleeve and putty with fitting just a back box.
I love the staggered tailpipes you've gone for, any idea of the tailpipes diameter? look to be 70mm?

I've just nipped out to the garage to measure them and they are about 63mm. If you went with a Powerflow, you could get a replacement cat, but they would be able to cut the pipe after the existing cat and weld your new pipe to it. It seems slightly daft throwing a perfectly good one away to pay for a new one. If you do chose to go for a Powerflow system, try to chose an established franchise. The one I used in Aylesbury has been fitting Powerflow systems for about six years and now have built up a good knowledge of what components to fit to produce the required results.

My experience of topgear exhausts and alloys is not good. Would never use them again fair enough different branch but i found them unskilled and really didnt think they new what they were doing. I waited for 2 months after paying money to get the parts watched them working on a car, not mine and made the decision to leave with the parts an get them fitted else where.
Exhaust does look nice fair shout just think id rather get one designed for the car by a propper company rather than trusting a mate in a franchise garage with my pride an joy.

As I said earlier, Powerflow dealers are franchisees and Topgear Exhausts in Aylesbury have been Powerflow dealers for 6 years and are not part of a chain. The business is run by two brothers. Personally, I don't think that they would stay in business for that long if their work was not up to scratch, particularly as exhausts are their principal business.BristolZed wrote:My experience of topgear exhausts and alloys is not good. Furthermore, they are not mates, as you suggest in your reply and I paid for the work after it had been completed to my satisfaction and not in advance. They also offer a lifetime warranty with the exhaust for as long as I own the car.
You suggest that an exhaust designed specifically for the car would be the way to go. I tried this route a few years ago to replace the original exhaust on my then daily driver. I had a Nissan Primera eGT and had it fitted with a Scorpion cat back system. It sounded fairly much as the standard one did, dragged on the floor over speed humps, despite having a standard suspension set up on the car and I didn't get any choice of the tailpipes.
For my money, a custom made stainless steel exhaust was the best option, I am happy with both the look and the sound and would recommend the fitters that I dealt with.

Came across this post from 2010 and thought it might be useful to regenerate it again to get the latest feedback from you guys out there. I've been trawling through the past posts because my '97 2.8 has now covered 125 clicks and is probably getting a bit long in the tooth, albeit at present it sounds ok. However, it is the only thing that does concern me if I'm on a trip away to the Spa Classic next year and perhaps Italy in a couple of years time, or any outing, I do not want it to spoil my day! I don't intend selling it for a long time so I'm thinking the sooner I get it replaced probably the better, thinking reliability and use. So, my dilema is standard or stainless replacement?? Don't want to lose the spare wheel and want to keep it as standard to look at as possible ie twin pipes on near side. Neither do I want it sounding like a 'spotty boy racers pram' on tick over, however, I would like it to sound 'nice' in the higher RPM range, I'm sure you know what I mean.
Four years later, more miles on the clock and newer owners I'm sure I'm not the only one contemplating a replacement (cat back) exhaust, so photos, various types of system, prices, recommended suppliers and fitters (perhaps rogue systems/fitters ) maybe now is a good time to reignite this ongoing post. I've just had a full powerflow decat system installed. Second hand so won't mention price but thinking of having some mid silencers installed as it's just too loud in the cabin.

I bought a "Longlife" stainless steel exhaust (new cat and cat back) for my 1.9 a couple of years ago. I suspect (but not 100% sure) that Longlife exhausts took over "Powerflow". I was impressed with the quality and skill of the bespoke fitting. They offer three "noise levels" 1) Full sport, 2) medium and 3) Quiet/OE. I went for the latter and it was still louder than the OE but not unpleasant with a low, deep growl at idle and a nice noise at full throttle. It is definitely not boy racer - not something I want at my age. You can pick your exact choice for tailpipe trims - on yours I guess you would want to retain the twin tail pipes.

Thanks for the reply Del, as I said previously, I too am not in the market for a really loud racing exhaust sound. My wife quite enjoys coming out for a spin in the nice weather and in fact we are going for a nice relaxing tearoom 'jaunt' around the Lakes later in summer, so I don't want to put her off! The third option, like yours, sounds what I'm looking for as well. Hoping its just a cat back (which still isn't cheap) plus the standard 2.8 twin pipes will suffice. Do you have any pics and costs (although I would imagine prices might have gone up)? Thanks Pete

I had a cat back system on my old 2.8 Z3.
Back box was Sebring, had a deleted cat and mid silencer removed, wasn't too loud as a daily drive.
Made a nice gargle at low revs when cold.

Ok thanks for the responses so far. The following quotes are for a 1997 2.8 (M52), aft of the cat (Cat back) keeping to near as OEM exhaust as possible.
Powerflow use Mr Tyres at various locations, this one being Leicester....£360-400
Roar Power Birmingham....£599
Longlife Northampton....£650-699 (Ouch!)
Custom Chrome Nuneaton....£550 (ish)

The best advise I gained was to take your car along and discuss what you are actually looking for, with regards to noise and quality etc. It also gives you the chance to inspect the workshops and checkout the guys who you are trusting with your baby! Although the Powerflow is considerably cheaper (which I know is not often best), when I spoke to Kevin at the Powerflow head Office in Bridport, Devon, I found him to be helpful and very knowledgeable. My only concern, is having it fitted at Mr Tyres, who I've never used before so I don't really know what they are like, however I think I'd feel more comfortable with a specialist exhaust fitting company, rather than just your run of the mill high street tyre/exhaust fitter....I'm sure most of you know what I mean?? Tks Del, did you use these guys in Birmingham? And do you have any pics please? Your requirements seem to be what I'd be looking for, similar to OEM, subtle but still sporty ... and not 'in your face' testosterone!3) Quiet/OE. Sent you a PM with some piccies. I used a firm in North Bristol (Longlife Franchise) but used the Longlife Birmingham advert to negotiate the price down - didn't need much work/effort to do so

I fitted a Supersprint system to my old Alfa 156 veloce. I loved it, however was expensive!

I'm currently looking into getting my zed a new exhaust as its just come up on the mot as an advisory that the exhaust is 'blowing' . I'd really like to replace it with a stainless steel system and wondered if any one else near me new the best place to get the job done. I'm in Oldbury but don't mind travelling for a decent job well done.

Hi i had a stainless steel exhaust made and fitted by a company in Sheffield . I think it was Scorpion exhausts , You can choose what tail piece you want from about 50 styles. Also you can choose how you want it to sound. Quiet, mid tone or loud. It cost about £360. and has a 25 year warranty . That was fitted to my old Z3. my new one already came with a stainless system but it was too loud for me so i took it to them and they altered it to how i wanted it. I would reccomend them to anyone.

S/steel Cat back on the cards. Anyone one used Custom Chrome in Nuneaton? It's easy for me to get to but more to the point the guys seem very knowledgeable and helpful. £550 for my 2.8, but this seems to be the going rate.

Finally bit the bullet and got Graham and Adrian over at Custom Chrome Ltd in Nuneaton to fit one of their cat back stainless steel exhausts. Really helpful guys and more than happy to let me watch what was going on.
Cat back fitted to my Nov 1997 2.8 was £485 fitted. (Note that my 2.8 is a single cat leading to a mid box then to the large rear back box, some engines have two cats which incorporate two mid boxes then have two pipes leading into the large rear box, so price may differ) 024 7638 7808 http://www.custom-chrome.co.uk
Although my old exhaust was not in its youth (126k) I rescued it from the skip and helped out another Zed owner who's exhaust had just blown....win win!

I had a look under my M52TU 2.8 last week, and have the twin cats to a single box then the rear silencer.
There is no join at all anywhere along its full length, with the exhaust beginning and clamped at both manifold headers and ending at the tail pipes.
My 'middle' box though is nearly at the back of the doors.
I thought about at a cat back system but even if they changed the middle box it would be about 4ft of exhaust system that I would end up with .....for about £500 ?
For £150 I can get a fitted stainless backbox, but would it take another £350 to get me a middle box and 12 inches of pipe?. if so, I will pass on that. I would want their pricing to be nearer £300 for mine.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Mines the older M52 which is different in layout underneath and sounds quite different to RockyDave's 2.2 which I think is the M54 (but stand to be corrected), this this being a lot smoother in sound and more subtle than mine. My M52 sounds a bit more in your face but does sound lovely when above 4000rpm! At 57 (well 58 tomorrow!) I did say that I didn't want it to sound like a boy racer, which it doesn't, but there is a little more of a sporty roar from the rear when one demands more on the accelerator...which I like. I rear box isn't as huge as the OEM, so perhaps that accounts for it sounding a little more sporty, also it's new so no carbon build up yet. When Mrs KF is on board side windows up to stop the hair from being ruffled and lower the roar, also light footed. When she's not on board....windows down and firewall it! Great thing is she's not even noticed as most of it is hidden underneath

800 miles to Spa Classic and back plus another 800 pleasure and work, she now has a good carbon coating inside and now sounds even better. Diff and G/box oils changed and even my local 'indi' chap complemented on the underside bling!

Just read all this with interest as I need a system fitting including cat. I was hoping £300 would cover it but after speaking with Pete (koolflyer) looks like I'm out of sync with it! Anyone selling a decent time used system for a 1998 2.8 m52tu please pm me. Tar.

Some Power Flow dealers/franchises will do work for cash.
I had the mid silencer fall off my coupe, they replaced with a straight through stainless pipe for a great price £50ish, it was a while ago. I already had a Sebring rear box and it didn't make it any louder.
