Viscous fan clutch.

Post by Southernboy »

I have just bought a new Viscous fan clutch. In doing so, I discovered there are 3 options. Option 1: BMW OEM part £.185 (South African prices) Option 2: Meyle £.60.00 and option 3: Local importer of BMW parts from the US. called MD House. £.30.00. They are all identical!!
Also found another interesting thing about these clutches. If it has a clock type spring on the front side (opposite the big nut)...don't buy it !! The problem of the one with the spring is that when you get up to high speeds, it doesn't disengage, and consequentl with the RPM it "roars" loudly. It seems these were originally made for Toyota Cressida cars and the spring is a Jap innovation to keep them cool. I guess it's fine if you're driving in Tokyo traffic, but not on the open road.
