BMW Oil Service
Engine compartment

• ooo Call up faults, print off and attach to inspection sheet.
  ooo Change engine oil and renew filter element. (5l, ///M 5.5l)
  ooo Reset Service Indicator in accordance with manufacturers directives.
  ooo Check fluid level and concentration of screen wash resevoir including intensive wash fluid.
  ooo Check brake and clutch fluid level.

Running gear

• ooo Check PAS system for leaks.
  ooo Check steering for freedom from play.
  ooo Check condition of track rod and front axle ball joints.
  ooo Check steering box for leaks, UJ's couplings and flexible gaiters.
  ooo Check braking system for leaks, damage, and correct position including handbrake cables and bleed nipple covers.
  ooo Check brake pads/discs (///M only).
  ooo Front and read brake pads: measure thickness with guage (non-///M only).
  • If pads are renewed: Clean out calliper cavities, check brake disc thickness and surface condition, grease centering spigot on alloy wheels. If rear pads are renewed: check and clean parking brake linings1.
  ooo Check handbrake level travel, freedom of movement of cables and if necessary adjust as specified.
  ooo Complete tyre check on page 2

Body/electrics

• ooo Check and adjust all screen washer jets.
  ooo Check ALL exterior lights.
  ooo Check ALL instrument and control lighting and ALL other interior courtesy lighting.
  ooo Check operation/condition of seatbelts.

Final check (test drive)

• ooo Check: brake, steering, clutch or automatic transmission, telltale and warning lights and Check Control.
  ooo Ensure handbook record is completed.

BMW Inspection I
Body/electrics

• ooo Check the lights.
  ooo Check the instrument and display lighting and the heater blower.
  ooo Check the horn, headlight flasher and hazard warning flashers.
  ooo Seat belts: check condition of belts, function of reels, belt locks and catches.
  ooo Battery:
  • Check battery acid level and state of charge (Magic Eye)
    If necessary: recharge battery1.
  ooo Renew sealant for M-Mobility system every three years1 (///M only).
  ooo Inspect entire body - except cavities - for corrosion.

Engine compartment

• ooo Brief diagnostic test.
  ooo Change engine oil and renew filter element. (5l, ///M 5.5l)
  ooo Renew the spark plugs (1.9 only).
  ooo Check valve clearances and adjust if necessary (///M only).
  ooo Check coolant level. When refilling: check concentration.
  • Note: change the coolant after max. 4 years (///M 3 years) (filling quantity as required)1.
  ooo Reset Service Indicator in accordance with manufacturers directives.
  ooo Windscreen washer and intensive cleaning system: check fluid levels and top up if necessary.
  ooo Power steering resevoir: check oil level, add oil if necessary.
  ooo Power steering: inspect for leaks.
  ooo Brake and clutch hydraulics: check fluid level and top up if necessary.
  ooo Brake fluid: renew according to Service Interval indicator display, but not later than after 2 years1.

Running gear

• ooo Front and rear brake pads:
  • Measure brake pad thickness with measuring guage.
  • If pads have to be renewed: clean caliper apertures. Check brake disc thickness and surfaces. If rear brake pads are renewed: check parking brake linings. Grease centering spigot if car is fitted with light-alloy wheels1.
  ooo Disc brake pads front and rear (///M only):
  • remove and install, check overall thickness.
    Clean our calliper cavities, renew pads if necessary.
    Brake discs: check surface condition and thickness including parking brakes.
    Alloy wheels: grease centering spigots.
  ooo Steering components: check for freedom from play, leaks, damage and wear.
  ooo Underbody including all visible parts: check for damage, leaks and corrosion.
  ooo Brake lines and unions: inspect for leaks, damage and incorrect positioning.
  ooo Parking brake: check lever travel and adjust according to manufacturers directives if necessary.
  ooo Tyres (including spare wheel):
  • Check and record tread depth, Tyre condition - check for any cuts, lumps, bulges, or other damage. Check tread wear pattern, Check pressures and correct if necessary.

Final check (test drive)

• ooo Check items affecting road safety:
  • Bed down pads for parking brake, Steering or power steering, Clutch, Shock absorbers, Check telltale, Check Control.
  ooo Ensure handbook record is completed.

BMW Inspection II
As Inspection I, plus:
Engine compartment

• ooo Renew the spark plugs.
  ooo Intake air silencer: renew air cleaner element (renew more frequently in very dusty conditions).

Running gear

• ooo Change oil in rear-axle final drive (///M only). (1.3l)
  ooo Parking brake: check lining thickness (///M only).

2nd BMW Inspection II
As 1st Inspection II, plus:
Running gear

• ooo Check clutch driving plate for wear.

Running-in check (///M only)
Engine compartment

• ooo Brief diagnostic test.
  ooo Change engine oil and renew filter element. (5.5l)

Running gear

• ooo Change oil in rear-axle final drive. (1.3l)

Final check

• ooo Check items affecting road safety:
  • Brakes (bed down parking brake on cars with rear disc brakes), Steering or power steering, Check telltale, Check Control.
  ooo Ensure handbook record is completed.
