found out the hard way
found out the hard way, yeah I went to the main dealler who gave me a list of parts to fit the hoops, and he came back with a price of £340 but told me that was for the hoops, but it was actualy for the hoops and the box plate and some small brackets for the hinges and covers for the bucket. So I ended up going on the American ebay and picked the rollbars up for $65 and postage but it still worked out cheaper doing it that way.
But as for the rest, well you have no option but to go with the dealler

Roll bars
Or the alternative is to find a car in a breakers yard. Yes, I managed to find a car that had been rolled and I managed to salvage the plastic bits and brackets for £50. I bought newish Roll Bars from someone who had changed to chrome so the whole fix cost £160 + 4hrs work - can be a bit fiddly to do. The only special tool required was a Torx socket.

I would say not - if you look at this diagram on RealOEM, you will see that #6 is the lid and #4 the liner. Usually if part numbers consists of several other parts you will see a dimension line encompassing those parts on the diagram.minniebannister wrote:Does anyone know if the 51168407238 Box Set, Quantity/ 1 £107.20
includes the Lid and the Box liner?
The liner with be very much narrower/shorter than non-rollhoop one, as the hoops invade the space it occupies. You could feasibly fit everything without a liner, but when I dismantled mine last month, I found that the liner actually adds a fair bit of structural rigidity to the setup, so for the sake of £35, I'd buy one.

Easier alternative, a kit supposedly that will fit cars without stock fitted roll hoops...

Roll Bars
The AC Schnitzer bars were made by Alumex, who probably still sell them - have a look at their website. Their prices were a lot less than ACS, too.
The catch with these pretty roll-over bars is that you have to fit a perspex wind shield, most of which prevent access to the back of the cockpit when the hood is raised, so you cannot toss your jackets etc into the back. Those which have a velcro-attached centre piece are still a apin, as you have to put it somewhere.
In general, they are about as practical as the BMW tonnau cover, or chocolate fireguards etc
The BMW mesh shield is great, as its centre can be quicly zipped down, and it can be raised to act as a glare-reducer at night, when in dense traffic with a 4X4 or white van-driving dunce behind you.

Sorry Si, mine aren't Alumex, just cheap Ebay items. Alumex have the same shape as ACS where mine are rounded at the top.

Thanks Red
I might however lookout for the parts from Salvage n the likes.
If not i'll have it all apart & put a couple of 5" subwoofers in there,
it would save modding the padded out part behind the passenger seat
for a flat style 10" sub...
as i want to stear clear of mounting a sub on my modded compartment lid, i could make it very secure but theres lots of fooking idiots out there,
& i'd proberly get myself arrested & in court instead of the guilty party...but i'd be secure in the knowledge justice had be done LoL

i'd quite like to do this myself but wouldnt want to lose the compartment and it seems a bit pricey to buy all of the proper parts. i was thinking about fitting hoops like above but cut the compartment lid into three sections (cut red lines in pic) so that the lid would still open... and if it loked a bit rough around the cuts i could always cover it in leather.
think this work? im looking for somebody to point out the faults in my idea.

When I did this job using parts from a breakers yard I followed the 21 pages of instructions found at http://www.mz3.net/articles/228.html

I don't think that would necessarily work that well. You would need to both cut the lid AND remove the inside of the box (comes out after removing a few screws I think) but then your storage box obviously won't have a nice bottom to it.
If you get the parts from a scrappy then you would still have the storage box it would just be a lot smaller. I want to fit roll hoops in my 1997 but all depends on finding the parts at a reasonable price.
It doesn't apply to you as your car is newer, but I read on realoem.com a warning in CAPS that says something like "WARNING, NEVER FIT ROLL HOOPS TO A CAR WITH A BUILD DATE BEFORE 01/97" but to be honest I don't remember a time I ever saw a Z3 built in '96.
i think this is probally because the older z3's didnt have the steal mounts for the roll hoopsdanieltharris wrote:Hi jack,jack-p wrote:i'd quite like to do this myself but wouldnt want to lose the compartment and it seems a bit pricey to buy all of the proper parts. i was thinking about fitting hoops like above but cut the compartment lid into three sections (cut red lines in pic) so that the lid would still open... and if it loked a bit rough around the cuts i could always cover it in leather.

Okay it could work i was thinking the same thing myelf cutting smoothing the edges if not cover with leather... now it is the hinges that are the problem. but i think you could relocate them, but u'd need to find a method of attaching them, glue gun, melted plastic, some strong glue compound, or i'm sure you could make some frabic strips they could work as hinges.
good luck
good luck
I finally succumbed and fitted roll hoops to my Z3. As my car still looks like new inside, I went for the expensive route and bought all new BMW parts.
The rollhoop retrofit kit is no longer available, so I had to buy all the parts individually. Annoyingly it looks like the kit contains a liner and some new hinges, which were not on the diagram. I am in the process of ordering these and will post the part numbers shortly.
Here are some pics of the install. Took me about 5 hours, including taking photos, cups of coffee and talking to neighbours.
A very big pile of boxes
What the boxes contained
Removing the storage box - part I - remove rear screws
Removing the storage box - part II - remove interior screws
Removing the storage box - part III - remove screws from either side of propshaft tunnel
Free the end of the seatbelt
Feed through the turret, undo 3 screws and remove turret
Undo screws on side trim, plus one halfway down door and one at end, remove and discard bracket - it is a good idea
to unplug the speaker cable at this point. Note that I couldn't remove my side trims as the hardtop mounts got in the way,
so just lifted them out of the way as I worked. I also had to remove the plastic plug holding the carpet in place.
Each bracket mounts with 7 Torx bolts and 2 nuts
The bolts are tightened in the order 1 - 4, torque to 18Nm on bolts and 5.5 Nm on nuts
Bracket fitted with roll hoop in place
Wider view with both sides fitted
I will post up some more pics when I get the other bits. I have put the storage box back on the car, but the covers won't fasten on without the liner and hinges.
Cheers R.

Just a quick note to say that I think I now have all the parts - as the retrofit kit is no longer available I had some fun tracking down two of the parts from it - a pair of hinges on brackets which bring the hinges inboard by about 10cm and the liner for the storage box onto which two of the covers clip - the former turned out to be in a fitting kit and the latter looked like it was going to be difficult to obtain as neither the UK or Germany had any. I'll post part numbers and current prices up later along with some pics. Have to take my hat of to my local BMW dealer for tracking down the hinges for me.
Cheers R.

Parts now all fitted. As the rollhoop retrofit kit is now discontinued (this was the hoops, the mounts, a new liner and some replacement hinges - you still need the covers above), the following parts are what it contained - all still seem to be available.
From this diagram (numbers in brackets are what I was billed for):
54.61.8.401.335 Left Rollover Bar, Quantity /1, £129.57
54.61.8.401.336 Right RolloverBar, Quantity /1, £129.57
54.61.8.401.337 Left Support, Quantity /1, £54.35
54.61.8.401.338 Right Support, Quantity /1, £54.35
52.10.8.161.962 Torx bolt (M8X19), Quantity /8 (6), £0.24
41.61.8.217.419 Torx-bolt with washer (M8X18), Quantity /? (10), £0.39
51.24.8.225.186 Torx-bolt with washer (M8X12), Quantity /8 (1), £0.37
61.61.1.356.101 Locknut, Quantity /2, £0.21
51.41.7.053.138 Hex nut with flange, Quantity /2, £0.15
54.61.8.413.169 Slot cover, left, Quantity /1, £36.12
54.61.8.413.170 Slot cover, right, Quantity /1, £36.12
Sub-total £446.21 + VAT
And from this diagram we need the liner, two covers and fitting kit:
51.16.8.407.241 Stor Part, Quantity /1, £47.83
51.16.8.410.025 Cover, Quantity /1, £3.15
51.16.8.410.026 Cover, Quantity /1, £3.15
51.16.8.407.235 Mount Set (contains the hinges), Quantity /1, £20.96
Sub-total £75.09 + VAT
Sub-total current price for covers above £234.22
Total £755.52 + VAT
I may yet need to buy a gasket set (the sealing rubbers for round the storage box lid), part number 51.16.8.407.236 from the second diagram, but I will try re-using the old one first as the set contains two gaskets I won't use.
A quick piccy of the remaining parts I need to fit to get the new liner and hinges in place:
This is quite a long job and took me in total about 7 hours, but I had to put the car back together so I could use it whilst I waited for the second lot of parts, plus I was taking photos. If you get all the bits up front, the I would say about 4 hours would be reasonable for one person to do on their own. A torque wrench, and a socket set with torx bits will be needed. When ordering, get your dealer to print of the fitting instructions for you - mine did so without my asking - top bloke.
Cheers R.
