Fuel and Oil prices
Fuel and Oil prices
Oil prices have now come down to $89 a barrel, so i thought i would do a bit of research and compare the cost of a barrel of oil and the cost of a litre of petrol for the same period.
This is what i found
October 2008 oil was $90 a barrel and the cost of a litre of fuel was £1.12
May 2010 oil $90 a barrel and fuel £1.21 a litre
August 2011 oil $89 a barrel fuel £1.36 a litre
Now tell me the Government and Fuel companies are not ripping us off or even tell me if the Government isnt ripping us off why they can not do anything about the Fuel companies ripping us off.
Also bearing in mind there hasnt been an increase in tax since the May 2010 figures so why is fuel not back down to below £1.21 a litre.

The best thing about it is that everyone knows that Fuel affects nearly everything to do with the cost of living, we assume the Government is to thick to notice that but they are very clever as they know they will get more and more in taxes every time something goes up without it looking as there fault.

Re: Fuel and Oil prices
Bill, a good normal post? The reason the cost does not go down is because the effect of 1 dollar a barrel is not that large on a litre, the cost increase is purely tax by the uk government. in the USA premium unleaded Z3 fuel is 29p a litre, says it all really..............billz wrote:Oil prices have now come down to $89 a barrel, so i thought i would do a bit of research and compare the cost of a barrel of oil and the cost of a litre of petrol for the same period.

That i understand but when the price has dropped by around $57 a barrel in the last 3 months you would of expected more than 5p comming of a litre of fuel and like i said bearing in mind there hasnt been any tax increases in fuel in that period you would of thought someone would be asking questions yet hold and behold the good old British suffer and accept it in silence. In the USA they have just reduced fuel by around 3.1% to justify the drop in fuel yet our government has done nothing.

Don't forget that VAT is added on top of the duty, so when VAT rose to 20% at the start of the year, it added 2.5% to the price without any change in the duty. Duty was cut by 1p in March, but this wouldn't cover the rise due to the VAT increase.
Cheers R.

Well i have done my little bit. Not that i expect anything to come of it but i have just sent E-mails to BP,ESSO,SHELL and a daily news paper pointing out what i have done and if they could do some sort of article highlighting the facts
ie.
Lower fuel prices=lower delivery prices=lower consumible and none consumable prices=more disposable income=better economy.
The cost of fuel is irrelevant to me as i dont pay it,
kim pays for the fuel unless we go on runs or outings then we share and i have a company fuel card

The other factor to remember is that a barrel of oil is in USD... Which means you need to buy USD first, then buy the oil.
With the slumping GBP (even though the US isn't any better off, their currency seems to have remained fairly strong), so all the drops aren't really affecting us due to the FX rate.
One of the "conspiracy" theories around the first Gulf war, was that Saddam had enough of US imperialism and was going to sell barrels of oil in Euro's! Very much upsetting the status quo.

I think you will find that the rate of the dollar is at present $1.62 compared to $1.44 back in May 2010. So we actually get more dollar for our money so i think going on the exchange rate at the times then fuel should be even cheaper than the £1.21 it was in May 2010.

I dont believe that staying silent regarding fuel taxation is the way to go.

Well got my first reply from my E-mails and it just goes to show that there is price fixing within the Fuel Cartels. Which i thought was illegal
This is the reply from BP
Dear Mr Mcgruer
Thank you for your recent query about fuel prices at BP sites.
BP's pricing policy is based on maintaining value for money for consumers within each local trading area reflecting the location of the site, its facilities and the competition. This means the prices can vary from site to site, no matter how close and far away they are.
Prices at BP's company owned sites are based on local market conditions taking into account such things as the cost of getting the fuel to the particular site, the price of crude oil as well as the actual cost of producing the fuel.
We monitor prices on a site by site daily basis and we always try to maintain value for money for our customers as much as possible.
BP’s brand, focus not just on price like many fuel retailers; we differentiate versus our competitors with our convenience offer, loyalty program (Nectar), Ultimate fuels, fuels card offer and excellent locations, this enables BP to offer a wider offer than just price to our customers.
Duty on fuel is something which is set by the Government. After road fuel duty and VAT (which make up almost 70% of the pole sign price), plus transportation costs, overheads etc, margins on fuel in the UK remain very tight.
The actual cost of petrol is still relatively cheap if you take away the 70% of the cost which goes to the Government in taxes.
Also BP supplies a large dealer network who are independent businessman and set their own pump prices.
Thank you for taking the time to bring the matter to our attention and for allowing us the opportunity to respond to your concerns at this time.
Yours sincerely,

Why don't we all just boycott one company at a time, Starting with BP, we can all fill up elsewhere for six months, and BP get no sales whatsoever, Then we move on, and teach the next biggest company a lesson.
Bycotting all the petrol stations at once is short term, because they know we will have to fill up sooner or later, and this way we dont have to queue at the pumps in readiness.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
Good idea. We could do with getting as many people we know and select a date to start doing the boycot.
