So someone from a phone scam called me today....

Post by Dave'z3 »

Hey all,

I work from home, so I get the joy of 9 times out of 10 when I pick up the phone it's SOMEONE trying to steal/get money from me.

This time I was prepared!

The scam:

Someone calls saying that they work with Microsoft (Microsoft will never call you) and tells you that you're PC appears to be infected and they can help. They then infect your PC and then charge you to repair it, all under the rouse that they have this report from Microsoft.

I had some fun wasting their time and energy on a tea break..

Thanks mate :D About 4 of my clients have been burned by these people, so some pay back was in order!

I was indeed typing it into steetmaps, after the call I phoned the police and told them about the scam and also their address etc :D

Its a scam that everyone should really look out for though, they destroy your PC and then steal money from your accounts...

Dave

Very good :D

I had a similar but not as extravegant an experience.....

MY mother in law babysits on certain days of the week at our house and told me one day that Microsoft had rang saying I had a problem with my computer. My eyes lit up stright away, wow I could have some fun with this one. She even told them that they would have to phone back after 7pm and ask for John

Sure enough 2 days later I got the call (it was from an indian sounding lad). I played along much like the call above but I did not actually have my computer with me and turned on so had to go through the menus from memory (in hindsight it would have been better if my computer had been on as they runbled me after about 10 minutes). I kept on having to pull the phone away as I was laughing so much. Once they rumbled me I thought that would be the end of it but another guy came on the phone and started getting aggressive with me for wasting his staffs time, can you believe it ......

I ended up with an argument on the phone with him and just ended up in a fit of laughter which really seemed to wind him up. He hung up on me but then 2 minutes later rang me back to ask again if I wanted my computer fixing :head: another argument and him shouting down the phone (well I could here him but the phone was sat on the chair why he ranted on). This went on for another 4 calls with him phoning back, ranting for a minute and then hanging up.

It was nice to know I got to him so much but I still can't understand why he got so wound up as I thought they would just moe onto the next victim ? Obviously he had a small d!ck and large ego (not a good combination) and could not handle someone "messing them around"

The best scam is from AOL. Try and close your account. Need to call a premium number which charges 5 or 10p a MINUTE and can put you on hold for hours. I had to resort to FAX to head office to sort things. Then about 1 week later an email saying they need to talk to me and have tried a number of time to call without success and that i should ring the customer "NO SUPPORT" again at 5 to 10p a minute. I knew lwaving AOL would be a real pain so have recorded all conversations and communications. All now send to trading standards and ombudsman. B*********ds.

Wonderloaf - Thanks mate, I was about to make myself a cup of tea anyway and figured that would be where it ended...

Ragtop - Lol thanks Ron, I think "Nancy" needs to be head hunted by an actual company that provides support!

Jonttt - I would have gotten even more joy out of the whole experience if I had some irate "manager" on the phone for wasting their time! That was the highlights of a 30+ min conversation I had with the women. 10 mins of me pretending to try to find the keys...

I have no idea how I managed to keep so deadpan throughout, I think doing technical support for my clients helped me to know how to ask questions and where to get confused :P

Frank.A - Tom Mabe was (obviously) my inspiration for that call, the guys a genius! MabeinAmerica is his youtube channel :)

Mike - I'll keep that in mind if anyone mentions AOL.

Regards,

Dave

Remember everyone, Microsoft will NEVER call you - about 5 of my clients have been stung and it's cost them £80-£120...

Very good, I had a similar thing recently, when told they were 'Windows Technicians' I said I already had a man come round to clean my windows and it seemed an awful long way for them to come and clean mine and anyway I was happy with the job my man did, after a few minutes of him trying to explain that he was a 'Windows Technician' not a window cleaner he eventually got round to telling me that I had a problem with my PC (it's running slow he says) but how as a window cleaner would you know that I kept asking and kept this going for a few more minutes then I asked would this problem be the little yellow triangles with a exclaimation mark in them and the red circles with a white cross, he goes quiet, I said that is perfectly normal to see....... no reply....... over to you Mr Window cleaner i says.......click HE hangs up on me!! Can't wait for the next call.

I had one of these calls the other day - the operator I spoke to was ....Jack Daniels

Like Dave I string them along just to waste their time - I see it as if I'm wasting their time, it's less time they'll have to scam others

I frustrated one operator so much, he threatened to call the police on me - "bring it on" I said I'll tell them about your attempts to defraud me, phone went down pretty sharpish ....

Nothing is as frustrating as arguing with someone who knows what he's talking about.

Sounds like the same woman (there's probably a back alley call center full of them) who rang my mate from work who also just wasted their time and put it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hxXu0qD9Nc

The sad thing is I think some of these operators genuinely think that they're working for Microsoft or whoever and are just another instrument the scammers use to rope people in.

Nice one...

I caught a live one a few months ago.

Same scam, slow computer etc., and was told that I had a virus. OH NO, ROSIE, WE HAVE A VIRUS......I screamed, quick fetch the computer. I too put the kettle on but made a brew while the female caller waited on the other end :D Panting and puffing Rosie and I put the phone on loudspeaker and reacted noisily to every problem as it was listed. Help me I pleaded. Me and Rosie need your help.

This went on for 10 minutes as I banged around the kitchen, slammed doors, called out to imaginary family members and finally put Rosie on the phone and boy can she bark, her being a 5 year old Terrier Mongrel :bawl:  Every few seconds we kept still and we'd hear.............'are you alright sir, sir, are you alright'... :)
