I think the best option would be to check for the latest version of the board, see if it has an upgrade install facility, back up the SQL database and then follow the destructions and test
I recently upgraded a vBulletin board in this way to sort out some quirks, works fine now
It's a hang over from the old days (B.I.) when you ran it on a stand-alone PC.
(B.I. = Before Internet)
I used to run one years ago on a DOS system for my company. Users would dial in directly to it - so if you only had one phone line asa BBS operator, you could only have one person on the BBS at a time!

Grandmothers, sucking and eggs come to mind!
The sheer amount of customisation on this board means all upgrades are now done by manually applying patches to the various script files. It looks like one of the patch instructions was wrong: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=1516833
