Roof down music...
Roof down music...
Spring is in the air, roofs are coming down...
I thought we should compile a list of 'roof down' music (not driving music, thats different!).
My three obvious candidates for now are:
Massive Attack - 'Be thankful for what you got' (Blue Lines)
Madonna - 'Hollywood' (American Life)
...and the classic 'Summertime' - I've got 14 different versions of this on my iPod, but the one I'd go for for this list is the UFO remix of Sarah Vaughan.
I'm sure I will have missed some!
I know there is a lot of rock dinosaurs around, so I expecting some stuff that I definitely won't be downloading onto my iPod, but I'll take that risk

i'm blasting old ragga/rockers with the roof down... especially on the 'stalag' riddim. if you know what i mean (probably not ).
when i'm angry and stuck in traffic - skindread (very noisy ragga-h/c) or mix of the damned, undertones, the jam, buzzcocks and the clash.... for the roof down mainly 'guns of brixton'.
but i'm really not very normal.

It may not be cool but I quite like 'Take it Easy' by the Eagles playing in the Zed.... throw in some other tracks like 'Take it to the limit' or 'Life in the fast lane' (I'm sure they meant it to be 'Life in the BMW lane')
I must confess I also have a Carpenters CD in there somewhere which is sometimes quite relaxing.
Ok, I'll go and stand in the corner now and hang my head in shame.

Rock on G17DEY and Bloke......
But I have to say, THE best summertime roof down tune is.........
Summertime by Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff......
I can just hear it now....
"Here it is a groove slightly transformed
just a bit of break from the norm
Just a little something to break the monotony
of all that hard core dance thats gotton to be
a little bit out control cool to dance
but what about a groove that smoothes and moves romance
give me a soft subtle mix
and if it ain't broke then don't try to fix it......."

Gotta admit, Summertime Jazzy Jeff gotta be the all-time best for me, especially the third chorus, something like....
then six o'clock rolls around
you just finished wiping your car down
it's time to cruise so you head to the summertime hangout
it looks like a car show
everybody come lookin real fine
fresh from the barber shop or fly from the beauty salon
every moment frontin and maxin
chillin in the car they spent all day waxin
leanin to the side but you can't spead through
Two miles an hour so everybody sees you
there's an air of love and of happiness
and this is the Fresh Prince's new defintion of summer madness...
Its a pity Fresh Prince a.k.a. Will Smith lives under the shadow off that track and has never really released anything to better it.
I also like to drive top-down with some old school early 80's hip hop, failing that, Gangstarr, or some old reggae...Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, etc etc.

Can't beat a bit of 80's
It's the Best !!!
I've actually got the soundtracks from Series 1 to 3 of Miami Vice ... bit cheesy I know but good all the same.
Very atmospheric when driving at night through the rough tough streets of Warwickshire.
I've maintained all of my Pastel Trousers and Jackets in anticipation of their return to fashion, particularly now the Miami Vice Film is in production.
It's a shame I'm now built for comfort and not speed ... better get down to the Gym.
Anyway ... off out now ... Crockets Theme (extended mix) is next on ... real gunshots in it ... the 80's equivalent of the 1812 overture.

For me, at the moment, THE GLITTERATI are rocking my world.
A British band, their debut album has been produced by Mike Clink who produced the legendary 'Appetite For Destruction' (Guns N Roses).
Like G N'R, it is arrogant, colourful, strutting, ballsy rock. The album is released on April 25 on Atlantic Records (I have a promo). Ideally for noisy, topdown driving. And not too bad in the RAV-4 either.

no longer reading the service history in bed
I prefer vocal and lo-BPM house in the car compiled by the likes of Hed Kandi, although I admit to listening to almost anything, even the soundtrack from Need4Speed Underground
I have an important question to ask though: What do you do for CD storage? I have around 20 CDs in the car, all in the driver door's pocket, which is rather annoying but better than endangering my life with unzipping a cd carry case.
My pal's boxster had an excellent pop-out CD storage tray in the centre console, which was nice and tidy although it only held 4 CDs (if your car has MP3 that's not too bad). Any similar solutions or ideas for our cars??

Is that a playlist or a 'menu' for an evening out ...either way, you missed off Candyshop by 50 Cent!

I did a similar thread to this a while ago - some real interesting replies (and many downloads later )
I must admit I'm in the 'hard rock' camp - AC/DC, Van Halen, etc etc.
An occasional blast of Sir Mix-a-Lots "I like Big Butts" went down a storm at Lemans
MUCH respec' to Gimlet for the Miami Vice selection! Used to have them on tape, can't find them on CD anywhere.
(However, if you have a 'back-up' copy you're not using....... )
I have been known to dabble with a little trance-y type stuff. I think the album is called 'Rush Hour' - a collection. Also XZibits' "Get Ya Walk On" and "Hey Now" when I'm in that sort of mood.
However, two most memorable moments recently involving the top down tunes were:
Bazzas Red Noze Day - middle of Oxford Street at about 1130pm, and it starts........... the intro to and release of "Voodoo Chile" by J.H.
and lunch time in Monte Carlo with Kid Rock blasting out, especially "Cowboy"

Now that summertime is here, its time to crack out the Guiness hats methinks... picture me and a mate last summer when I had the Alfa Spider.
Me wearing the Guiness Irish hat like the madhatter sellotaped to my head bobbing about to the riverdance tune, and my mate in the passenger seat with the Auzzie Guiness hat bobbing along to Rolf Harris "Fine Day" when that was played..... :p
