Proposed round UK & Ireland run June 2008
I've spoken to a few people in the past about this with some interest, and suppose now is the time to do something and think about organising something if there is enough interest...
The idea is to do a tour of the UK and Ireland giving people the chance to do the whole trip, or just join in on a section that is close to them.
Obviously we won't be able to go everywhere in the islands, but, to have a sampler of the areas. I've done some preliminary research into it, and we're looking at about a week and 2000 miles (and 2 ferries) for most people (it'll be 4 for me!).
What I'm proposing (more specific details will be fleshed out if there's enough interest) and we'll be stopping off en route for sight-seeing / eating etc:
Day 1
Starting off somewhere close to London, and head for Land's End - 300 miles
Day 2
Head for Fishguard and get a late ferry for Rosslare, Ireland - 330 miles
Day 3
Head to Kildare and retrace the route of the Gordon Bennett race (the first road race in UK - 1904) and then head to Galway - 190 miles
Day 4
Head to Larne, via Donegal and Bushmills Distillery to get the ferry to Cairnryan - 260 miles
Day 5
Head to John O'Groats (hopefully on June 21st to co-incide with the longest day) - 360 miles
Day 6
Head down the east coast (I've used Newcastle as a proposed overnight point) - 370 miles
Day 7
Back to starting point - 290 miles
This has been posted on both Z sites and is open to anyone, Z owner or not.

Surely this epic event would warrant some sort of media coverage... if not even some sort of record..... a kind of "round uk/eire baton race in roadsters".... well, yo get my drift!
Certainly up for a few days in the Ireland part at least! For those of you that are over the water from us, this would be a great taster way of seeing Ireland.....
Now, Gazza..... THAT is an incentive hehe! Nice work Lyall, any help needed in organising the Ireland end please let me know. Could at least organise some sort of courtesy car wash/vacuum somewhere along the way for participants!!!!

Would certainly need that considering my cars tendancy to pick up cow dung along country roads.Justinitus wrote:Could at least organise some sort of courtesy car wash/vacuum somewhere along the way for participants!!!!

Lyall,
Like Justin am willing to help with any planning needed here in Ireland.
John O' Groats stint is tempting. Don't think I'll be able to do all. Thinking about heading away somewhere warm in June as well.

Cool, can anyone interested just post up what sections they are interested in to get a rough idea of numbers to see if it's going to work out? Remember that some of the sections will be mid-week.
I'm guessing the numbers for the total run will be relatively low...
Even if there's only a couple in for the full run, we can still do it.

August
Hi
We both work art schools so again Late July / august would be the only time we could do it.
Possibly interested in ;
Day 1
Starting off somewhere close to London, and head for Land's End - 300 miles
Day 2
Head for Fishguard and get a late ferry for Rosslare, Ireland - 330 miles
Day 3
Head to Kildare and retrace the route of the Gordon Bennett race (the first road race in UK - 1904) and then head to Galway - 190 miles
Day 4
Head to Larne, via Donegal and Bushmills Distillery to get the ferry to Cairnryan - 260 miles
Alex and Donna

I'd certainly be more interested in it then.PhoenixCoupe wrote:There seems to be people interested in doing this in July / August.
Is that more suitable for more people? Suppose weather would be better then - hopefully!

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?

Will not be abkle to do Scotland stint. Have spoken to other half who wants to go abroad on hols.
Thinking about going over to Scotland in March or April. Know that Chris and Andrew are interested in going over then with me. If we are going over about this time will post details on forum in the spring.
Will need to liaise with Scottish folks when planning this.

Weekend of August 2 & 3. Would be available 4th as well.
Or weekend of July 19, 20 & 21
Earlier dates may promise better weather. Last few Augusts have been crap!
