North Norfolk Coast Cruise 24th July.

PLEASE READ NEW NOTES BELOW - ITINARY NOW COMPLETE

We have organised a cruise along the North Norfolk Coast on Sunday 24th July, meeting at Sandringham Visitor Centre at 10am, there is loads of special picnicing style parking on the wide grass verges on each side of the road leading up to the Centre, where it is ideal to meet up. We can visit the Centre/Gift shop and you can either use a flask by your car or go in the restaurant for a coffee.

We have done our reconnoitre on the wettest day ever, we could hardly see out of the windscreen!! Despite this setback, we have finalised our North Norfolk Cruise.

We are starting the day at Sandringham Visitors Centre, (for Satnav users, PE35 6EH) with an arrival time of 10am. We would ask you to arrive with a full tank of petrol as there are not many garages on route. Parking on the picnic verges near the Visitors Centre, we can walk down to the centre for coffee etc or use a flask next to your car. Departing at 11am, the route we have chosen is the main coast road A149, which runs alongside the most picturesque coastline in Norfolk, possibly in the whole of East Anglia, to our destination, The Poppy Line North Norfolk Railway at Holt. We hope to catch the Steam Train from Holt to Sheringham and back. .

Along the route, at Burnham Overy Staithe Harbour, we will stop for a photo opportunity and a leg stretch. We will then proceed on to Holkham, where we will break for a light lunch of sausage rolls & sandwiches etc at The Rose Garden at Holkham.
From Holkham, we will drive along the coast to Weybourne and then onto the Station at Holt, where the drivers will have a chance to relax by either enjoying a short steam train journey into Sheringham or by taking the time to watch and photograph these bygone masterpieces. Return ticket prices for the train journey into Sheringham are £10.50 per person, £9.50 for concessionary tickets and for groups over 20.

The final stage of the journey will give us a faster pace along the A148, back to Kings Lynn, to the traditional Farmers Arms Pub which is part of the Knights Hill Hotel complex on the A148 roundabout/junction at Kings Lynn, arriving at approximately
6.30 to 7pm, where we have provisionally booked a room, so that we can get together for a coffee/drink and an evening meal to finish the day. The pub have said that they can provide a meal at the time, with approximately an hours notice, which I’m sure we can fill with chat about the events of the day. The prices range from £8.95 to £15 per person and vary from Pasta through to Steak.

We have taken note of all your suggestions posted on the forum, whilst considering our itinerary, our aim is to give you a taste of this part of the country. Bearing in mind that it will hopefully be a ‘top down’ beautiful Sunday in July, there are several favourite spots that will be impossible for more than one or two cars to even find parking spaces at that time of year. Even on a quiet day the A149 can be a challenging road to drive, in places it is very narrow and we expect at this time of the year, it will be quite busy. Because of the anticipated traffic, we have allowed several places to stop where people can catch up. We will hand out detailed notes on the day, so that those drivers, who bring along their Satnavs, wives and girlfriends will know the intended route.

The pub at the la strange arms hotel is a good stop for pub grub and a drink and they have a big car park thats right next to the beach....

Yes, Great pub for grub and lots to see nearby with Lifeboat & Gallery, we could make a stop there, but having only just left Sandringham at about 11.30, it is a bit too near to stop for lunch. If it is not beach picnic weather, we had thought about Holkham, good parking, Bygones Museum, Nature Trail, Walled Garden And Café, but not sure if good enough to eat there, Brancaster & Cley have some good pubs and restaurants, as we are trying to find somewhere of interest for everyone, combined with a good sea view aswell. We are going for a reconnoitre the weekend after next, and will come back and report, meanwhile any recommendations welcome

Holkham has a restaurant as we went there a few weeks ago but you will need a bank loan to get in and eat.

I know what pub you mean.. its right opposite holk beach car park/entrance... Last time i went they did bbq outside and wasnt too bad for food....
Could always bring your oun lunch...

It looks like you need one to park etc aswell. There a really traditional pub at Thornham called The Life boat, very qaint, with all old antiques etc on the walls, we ate there last year, bar and restaurant and Sunday lunches. Has anyone else been there recently

Yes, Good idea, Wells is a favourite place for us, we could loop back through Burnham Market, very pretty with good pub too. then either loop back to coast or motor back down country. Let's hope that it will be great top down, picnic weather. We are going on a reconnoitre on Sunday, to find where we can all park and be together.

We are finishing up at the Farmers Arms, an old tradional pub which is part of the Knights Hotel Complex on the A148/A149 Roundabout at Kings Lynn. Arriving back there late afternoon/early evening, there is plenty of room to park and chat and we can have Coffee/Drinks or even a meal, if there is a demand, but we will need to know approximate numbers for a meal, nearer the time.
This is all in the early stages of planning the day, which we hope will contain several interesting ports of call.

I spend a lot of time in this area and if I can be of help it would be a pleasure.

May I suggest that the best place for lunch would be the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe.

It has an absolutely fabulous view across the Staithe Marshes that is second to none. The food is very good and the prices though not cheap are reasonable for the quality.

Make sure that you book WELL in advance and ask for a window table.

Your idea of a loop is not a bad one. I'd head along the coast, stop at Thornham harbour (1pm tide, but not high) beautiful view there. Journey then through to Wells, head to Burnham Market and then book a late lunch at The White Horse.

Maybe on route have a drink or a coffee at The Victoria at Holkham.

Hi Guys, unfortunately we cant make this event, but I drove a chunk of the route at the weekend - unfortunately there were road works on the A149 outside Heacham down to 20mph and loose chippings all over the place and then just passed the turn off for the crazy golf course at Old Hunstanton through to Thornham again down to 20 and loose chippings galore! Hope you have fun, and can recommend The Yurt at Thornham for food/snacks and fruit and veg shop and Marco Pierre Whites Lifeboat.

P.S is the Purple Z the one Rossiters had for sale late last year?

Those roadworks should be gone by then. It's nearly a month.

If not take the back road through to Ringstead and along the top of the ridge to Thornham. The view from up there looking out to sea is great.

Agree that both the Yurt http://www.theyurt.co.uk/ and the Lifeboat http://www.maypolehotels.com/lifeboatinn/index.html are very good places to eat. Marco Pierre White has only recently taken over the Lifeboat and no significant changes have yet been made. Next year that will most certainly be a very top spot.

Theres also The Orange Tree in Thornham and the Ship Inn at Brancaster, as well as the Jolly Sailor in Brancaster Staithe. The Titchwell Manor has been used by another car club that I belong to in the past.

Any pub or Hotel along that road will be good, theres just not a bad one unless you're very unlucky. I would book though as a Sunday at the end of July will be busy.

The reason why I believe The White Horse to be the best venue for your trip though is because the views from their restaurant are as I said stunning. None of the others are even close. Sitting in any of the other venues and you could be anywhere as they have no views.

We actually aren't setting off from Sandringham until 11am, so that could give you an extra hour between the sheets!

If you're are going to be really late, meet us at the Rose Garden for Lunch on the main road at Holkham, we should be there between 12.30 & 1.30.

Failing that, if you are going to be really, really late, 3 to 3.30pm is the time we hope to be at the North Norfolk Railway Station at Holt.

But if you are really, really, really late, you can arrive just in time for sustenance and the usual chat about the day at the Farmers Arms Pub on the 'Kings Hill Hotel' roundabout at Kings Lynn between 6.30 & 7pm.

Of course we will PM the map and directions to make sure that you can find us!
