Most Westerly Place in GB (with piccies)

Post by pingu »

Decided I want to visit the extremes of the island I live on. I've done Dunnet Head, Lizard Point and Lowestoft in the past. Just one left to do - Ardnamurchan Point.

Today's forecast was favorable and I was in Scotland with an approprate vehicle, so it was now or never.

What an epic drive...

Erskine Bridge
A82 to Corran
Ferry to Ardgour
A861 to Salen
B8007 to Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
back to Salen
North on A861 to Lochailort
A830 to Fort William
A82 back to Erskine Bridge

Google Map of the Route

I knew the day was going to start off a wee bit overcast, but I'd been driving for about an hour and a half and this was the view of Loch Lomond - had I chosen the wrong day for this challenge?

but then

at the top of Glencoe

I drove out of the fog

and the top could at last come down :D

Glencoe looking south (still misty)...

Glencoe looking north (not a cloud in the sky)...

Image

Plan A was to go to Fort William and do the northern loop in the morning. Luckily, I stopped at the ferry terminal and saw this sign...

Image

Change of plan. If I was to get to the roadworks between 1225 and 1310, I'd have to do the southern section first.
So, time to get the ferry...

One of the many great views...

Image

Ardnamurchan Point (56deg 43min N, 6deg 13min W). Most westerly point (by longitude) on the island of Great Britain. Although, now Skye is linked to the mainland by a bridge I may have to do another trip :) . [Lands End is more westerly by OS grid]

Image

Overlooking Loch Moidart. It was near here that Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in 1745.

Image

Image

The temperature is 20deg C and there's still snow on Ben Nevis

Image

Glencoe (looking south). This morning visiblity was about 50metres, not now
...

It took 10 hours of hard driving, so would be no good for a cruise, but I'd highly recommend it for an individual drive.

It's good when you set yourself a challenge

Please tell me that is pronounced 'Ball lock'

I've tried saying it out loud in a Scotish accent and it sounds like something else to me :)

Great pics, makes me homesick!

Drove the Z4 up the west coast, Skye, Ullapool round Cape Wrath way along the top to Wick and back down the east coast to home (Glasgow then) two years ago, absolutely stunning experience

Will have to investigate Wales now I'm in BAth, but don't know where to start really

If someone asked me the most westerley place in UK I'm sure many including me would say land's end!
So I see it's not then. Beautiful scenery in Scotland. Thanks for posting. Makes me want to visit there again.

Most southerly (GB) = Lizard Point
Most westerly (Eng) = Lands End

Lands End and John o'Groats are not at either ordinal extreme - they are the two points furthest away from each other.
