Champagne trip 2006 19th-20th August
Jo and myself are planning a weekend away in the champagne area of France , you are most welcome to join us on the following;
The idea is for a weekend to the Champagne region of France, with visits to various Champagne houses.
We plan to depart on the Saturday at 10.33am(10.03 check in) from Eurotunnel ( http://www.eurotunnel.co.uk ) Folkestone to France.
Travel time of 35minutes and the additional hour of the time zone, puts us in Calais at 12.03am.
We then plan to meander down the French roads to the champagne capital city of Reims via the “A” and minor roads. For those who have never driven on the French roads they are a pleasure…
Travelling time to Reims is approximately 5hrs, we plan to arrive at Reims for our first champagne tour at the Veuve-clicquot champagne house (http://www.veuve-clicquot.com )
The tour is approximately 1hr. This has to be pre-booked I will book this as a group as numbers are finalised, I have pre booked a number of places already
We depart and make our way towards Epernay where our overnight accommodation will be based.
To keep the costs down and to be in comparison with the lakes weekend, we are suggesting the Hotel IBIS in Epernay ( http://www.ibishotel.com ) ,whilst it is basic hotel, it does offer secure underground parking and is within easy walking distance of the town’s eateries and Champagne houses on the Sunday. People are most welcome to choose Hotels of their own preference
Sunday we plan to visit the Champagne houses in Epernay of either Moet or Mercier, they are very close to each other and it will be down to personal preference, but I can highly recommend the Mercier tour, these tours last about 1hr. and both have access to their shops ..
We will then take lunch in Epernay area prior to our departure.
We then plan to make our way to a smaller private champagne house for a tasting and visit…
We will then make our way to the Old Reims race circuit, where the Grandstands still remain and are currently being renovated back to its original condition.
We then plan to return back to Calais for our return trip via the Autoroute, this will take about 2.5hrs giving us time to visit Calais for some duty free shopping.
Return Chunnel crossing at 18.33, back in Folkestone at 19.43
Costs;
For a weekend crossing the Chunnel is £64 return!
Hotels vary from IBIS £43.80
(Best western 90euros)
Champagne tours are approx £8.00 with tasting
Tolls on return approx £14.00
Mileage is approx 400miles
You will be responsible for booking your own crossing and Hotel
Please Post your interest below....

Sylv & Stu interested, though we'll be in a suitable car as to bring all the produce we see back to the UK
We stayed in Riems on the way to the Alps at Christmas and had a brilliant evening meal.
On the way back we stayed in Epernay!
Can't wait.
Have you already booked?

Will make no difference to the start time, the morning chunnel time was decided upon, to allow those who had to travel a distance, to be able to do the trip in one day.. rather than a 7am start with a overnight on the friday... it also means I haven't got to get up a too silly oclock

Just a glimmer of an idea to extend this for a few extra days down into the Burgundy region. Maybe make a week of it.
Just a very tentative idea at the moment but any interest anyone.

News back from Veuve champagne house is that the last English speaking tour that they can accommodate us is 15.30, so in order to work the times out, I'm going to swap the travel around, quick run down and slow meander back... depending on time and weather I will also arrange the Grandstand visit at the most appropriate time/day, only just found out from them (Veuve) so will spend some time re-plotting the routes and inform everyone....

How about meeting some slovenian Zeders...I am planning on a tour through France so I might just be in the neighbourhodd at that time...are we welcome? Untill when must we confirm our presence for sure?JAY wrote:Put me down as a maybe Gary. Would like to come to this.
Would be good if we can arrange to see our fellow french zedders too.
Many thanks!

Austin, It would be great to meet up with some fellow Zedders.. Our plan is at the start of the thread, so depending on your itinerary I'm sure a drink (or two) or at least the photo shoot at the old circuit would be brilliant.
Jay mentioned he had communicated with the French Zforum about meeting up for a social glass of the best..
If you require any further details then please feel free to PM me...

Sarah and I are interested as well, have you checked at all in France if the weekend coincides with the "black saturday" which is effectively the day that France/paris return from their summer holidays and driving in that weekend in France should be avoided at all costs.
If it does not fall in that weekend, i hope we can make it as well

how did you guess....
off to the UEFA U-21 in Portugal this weekend: Holland in the Final as well, double bonus... England did not quite make to the final....as a matter of fact they did not even make it to the tournament!
As far as German/world cup is concerned, unfortunatly, JVC is no longer an official sponsor anymore.
managed to beg 2 tickets though, Hol v Arg and the final match in Berlin so I know at least that I don't have to watch england play

Black Saturday
"Black Saturday"
I have been informed that the first and last saturdays in July and August are two of the busiest around cities and Paris... the one at the end of July and Start of August is "black Saturday" as the two groups swap over-- one goes on holiday and the others return...
To confirm this weekend does not include any of those dates.. (phew)
Nor is it the last weekend in August.....

Hi Chris and Emilie!
Welcome to Zroadster.
Thanks for the offer, but I think it's all sorted.
It's all on and all booked, but I'm just a driver.
I point the car where I'm told and press the 'GO' pedal...!
It's the co-pilots that hold all the vital information like timings and locations!
I'm sure that Gary will be here soon to give you all the relevant details.

Hello Tophemillie,Tophemilie wrote:Hi everybody!
A little post from France, and Epernay in particular where Emilie and I (Christopher) live with our Z3M.
We would like to know if you are still coming here and if the programme is finalised and why not if you need some help?
Yes, we are indeed still coming to your fair town quite soon in fact....
Most details are finalised, but if you ever feel you can add some information I'm keen to hear from you....
hopefully we will all at least share a glass of bubbly with each other over the weekend....
I've sent you a PM..
All the best garyw
There are still places at the hotel, however the Tunnel is fully booked up from 6am until midday departures, should anyone want to join us last minute...
Will shortly be sending out information packs with overview maps to follows..
I've not heard back from Simmer or RussJ, but I think they are currently away... (however I do have their details)
