David Coleman was a very famous sports commentator for many years who gained a reputation for saying silly things, long before Murray Walker.

Private Eye started a column quoting famous people saying silly things, which led to a series of books, all titled 'Colemanballs'....

Excuse the spelling of the famous runner's name, but as he left the pack for the finish line, Coleman proclaims:

".....and Huantorina opens his legs and shows his class....."

And a snooker one from memory:

"And for those watching in black and white, the brown is the one next to the pink....."

So you can see the 'glass hammer' suggestion fits quite well....
