It must be as mine is a 52 plate and was made in the last week of production and registered on 24th September 2002. A 53 is at least 11 months down the line. Where had it been all that time? I've seen 03 plates before but not a 53

An 04 plate is a first for me, before that the newest I'd ever seen was a 53 and that was on this forum :o

I imported a new Z3 in 1998 from Australia, and remember at the DVLA there was a discussion as to what plate it should receive. Someone in the office in North London said it was the build date and they needed that info from BMW, but she was then overruled by another who said it was the date I purchased it, then overruled again by another who said it was the import date, until they all agreed that it should be the day I registered it. ie that day. They were all somewhat confused, but it meant the car was an R reg at first, then an S reg.
