Interesting number plates spotted.

Not on Zeds, but cool anyway!

Last week I saw a very sexy E46 ///M3 in Phoenix Yellow. The plate was:

PH04 NYX

Too cool for words.

This morning I saw a Range Rover (or maybe a Land Rover...who cares anyway?) with the plate:

S54

Now THAT plate, I want!

the girl behind the desk asked me did I want a N.Ireland plate

Well, not really, coz I've already got a nice personal plate, (related to me, not the car) but seeing 'S54' this morning really got me going on the hunt again!

I think the letter 'Z' on DVLA is only for recent registered cars, 2001 on.
The ones you suggest are EXCELLENT, but no good for me coz mine's originally a 'Y' plate and you're not allowed to make your car appear younger than it is.

Shame, coz those plates are very similar to what I've been looking for...!

For those plates the car would have to be a 2004 54 Registered car or newer. As Alfie said, you can't make a car appear newer than it is by putting newer plates on it.

For anybody who might be interested (yawn, yawn), my plates are as follows:

I have 100 GRA on my 1999 2.8 Z3 (my name being Graham). This plate dates from 1958, was issued by Derbyshire County Council, and has been in my possession since 1975 - since when it's been on around eight BMWs.

My other plate, which is one of the oldest numbers in existence, is G 181, and is currently on a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. This was the 181st number to be issued by Glasgow City Council, in the first couple of months of 1904. The fact that it is 'G' (for Graham) is largely coincidental - I had the chance to buy it, and I just liked the rarity value of a single letter registration which just happened to be G, although it could have been anything else.

Yes, I know I'm being conceited, but I just love it when I fill in my details when registering at a hotel and the receptionist says "we do need your full registration number, please sir," expecting me to give three letters after the G181! "No, that's it - G 181," I reply.

I have to say (and I differ from some fellow members of the Registration Numbers Club here) that I am totally against car registration letters/numbers being mis-spaced or manipulated to look like something else. They give us all a bad name, and apart from that they look naff! With these new number plate recognition cameras coming in, I reckon the police will soon be clamping down a lot harder.

I've got E85ALP on the Roadster for obvious reasons.

If you are looking for a plate that is not listed the DVLA will check as to whether it has been issued.

They made the above available at auction for me.

Is the Registration Numbers Club still running. I used to belong to it 15 or so years ago, and go to a few of the rallys/shows, got quite a few photos from the events

Yes, the Registration Numbers Club is still going strong. I was one of the very first members, in 1975 or 1976, and like you I thought it had folded but I saw a feature on car numbers in the Daily Telegraph last year which mentioned the RNC, so I contacted them.

I'm now restored to membership after a gap of around 25 years! I don't think their admin was all it might have been for quite a few years, because my address never changed and I'm sure I didn't intentionally stop being a member.

Yep, Garyw. The plate cannot be longer than 6 digits and must be socially acceptable (no obvious smut) although some are very cleverly disguised.
Some plates are worth thousands others just for fun. The company that runs the plates sometimes hold auctions and of course there are always plates for sale in the auto mags and local papers. When changing the car you can switch the plate to your new car or sometimes sell it with the car to get more for the car. We also have picture plates and euro plates (made the same size as yours) to suit european cars. These cost a bit more though. Thanx for your interest. GR8M8S

Like I said before, don't take this too seriously. I'm as much a number plate nerd as anybody, it's just that I believe that a good number doesn't need playing around with. I'd be happy just to go along with GAZ 2451.

I don't see the appeal of personalised number plates. Great if you happen to just pick up one coincidentally when buying your car.

personalised plates are so popular here in NZ. Some are weird and you can nearly drive into the back of them trying to work them out. I saw a little red mazda sports car with REDQT on it recently which was cute.

Of course all us Z owners really just need the same plate.. PURFECT

Useless reg. number info : The owner (Trimite Ltd) of 1 MB also owns 1T which was spotted in a earlier post, also owns 1 CAR & MB 2. not to be confused with Max Bygraves old number MB 1 (in photo)

Having just returned from NZ where I saw lots of cool number plates, some like the UK cleverly doctored to make a name, some obviously a business name I wonder why we have the obsession to make our number plates so complicated. What is the big fascination in having the plate show the age of the car, and where it is from? In Hong Kong they make do with 2 letters and anything between 2 and 4 numbers, and that's it. No age identifier or anything like that. Why do ours have to be so complex

2 digit plates are called dateless plates they are becoming rarer and rarer they were the first plates.. I believe the first uk plate was A1

F1 went on sale last year god knows what its worth, look on www.regtransfers.co.uk there are some for hundreds or thousands

I"ve seen some great ones over the years:

"SPL1F" on a burgundy Volvo 960 Estate being driven down the A1 by a pair of oldies.

"H1" on a ancient white Toyota Carina being driven by an old woman - used to see it around Godalming a lot.

"UN1" on a Vauxhall Nova 2dr saloon in Dundee.

"1 KNO" on a Jag E-Type on the Strand.

And possibly my favourite, proving Europeans can have a sense of humour:

"I VANT 1" on an Austrian-registered Rolls Silver Cloud on Pall Mall.

I've actually asked the DVLA several times to issue to me a unissued M-suffix plate which would spell my surname but they have not responded at all

The limo was in San Farnsisco, the truck and VW were both in Carmel California and the caddyshack Cadillac was in the wilds of the Rockies in Colorado. Enjoy

I have had exactly the same conversation with DVLA.

They told me that the unissued plates I was interested in would be offered in one of their auctions at some point in the future.

They also told me that they cannot tell me exactly when my plate would be auctioned.
