I have seen it and it is definitely worth a look! I sold mine the other week but mine was not as good as this condition wise.
Re: wanted m roadster
Liam's is certainly on my short list.

Re: wanted m roadster
My M roadster is NOT 'molested' thank you very much..
Words such as 'standard' or 'unmodified' are more appropriate.

Re: wanted m roadster
These 2 are on my checklist.
40000 miles unmodified is attractive but for £1200 more what a motor Liam has. Difficult choice. Want to have a viewing week and see as many as I can.
Love to have a third one to see.

Ha Jon,
He wont want to buy it.
But it gives me an excuse to get it out of the garage!

Re: wanted m roadster
I suppose it depends what you “want out” of the car. A completely original example with 20,000 miles has understandable and definite appeal if you want to keep it garaged and take it to the occasional summer car meet. Zcade’s car certainly looks a good example both in terms of relatively low mileage (79,000) & condition but also with things like the “sorted” servicing, hood, suspension and vanos - problems which even very low mileage OE examples are not necessarily immune from. If I was in the market, and the price was right, it looks a worthy example if, like me, you just wanted a car to drive and enjoy and are not too OCD about adding mileage and getting it dirty now and then.
I get the impression that there are quite a number or slightly rough Z3ms around which have had a hard life and not been serviced that well in recent years.

...and some of them get advertised as low mileage, therefore high value.Del wrote:I get the impression that there are quite a number or slightly rough Z3ms around which have had a hard life and not been serviced that well in recent years.
There was one advertised here recently that had it's service history printed out. It had gone five years between services and had missed out Inspection services.
An M is a £40,000 car with high running costs. I think there are a lot of people who will buy them because they can afford the £6-8k purchase price, but they can't afford the £2k per annum maintenance and running costs. Consequently, they stop using it or use it very little (leading to a low mileage example), but they are still not maintaining it.

Re: wanted m roadster
OK chaps
A few questions: Is an M version a "high maintenance" animal? How much more complicated are they than say a 3 litre? What can or does go wrong.
I am aware of VANOS and Bootweld issues.
My BMW specialist doesn't see them as a problem. They might sniff an "earner" but I do trust Herring and Palmer (Norwich) to look after me.
I don't want a "money pit".
By the way I think £2000 a year is a fair price to pay for running a car like the M. If anything less than I thought.
An honest appraisal would be appreciated.

Ray
I don't spend anywhere near 2000 pounds a year.
Also if you find a good car the runnng costs should be minimal (mileage dependent of course).
For servicing Independent specialists are just as good as main dealers these days (if not better in some cases).
If your not doing a great number of miles per year, you can service the car every 2 years to keep the service history up to date.
A DIY oil and filter change in between the 2 year service can be undertaken as well if your competent.

Re: wanted m roadster
If you take 4000 miles per year as a guide. The following are estimates. I DIY, so the servicing estimates are guestimates...
750 litres of V-Power (@ £1.35 & 24mpg) = £1,000
VED = £225
Insurance = £200
Oil Service (minimum) per year = £250 (assuming non-DIY)
Inspection Service every other year = £600 - £1,000 (£250 per year additional to Oil Service)
Coolant change every other year = £100 (£50)
Brake fluid change every other year = £100 (£50)
Renew fluid in M-Mobility every three years (Nobody ever does this ) = £10 for can of Tyre Weld
Tyres last around 10,000 miles if not used on track. Full set of Continental Contact 3 = £500 (£200 per year)
£300 per year for extras isn't excessive as things go wrong and they can be expensive.
Obviously, if you DIY, it can be cheaper...
Oil Service
Oil Filter (11 42 7 833 769) = £15
Oil (Mobil One 0w/40) = £30
Inspection 1
Oil Filter (11 42 7 833 769) = £15
Oil (Mobil One 0w/40) = £30
Valve Shims = £7ea
Inspection 2
Oil Filter (11 42 7 833 769) = £15
Oil (Mobil One 0w/40) = £30
Valve Shims = £7ea
Spark Plugs (6x NGK PKR7A-3641) = £50
Air Filter (13 12 1 730 449) = £25
Diff Oil (2x 1 litre Castrol SAF-XJ SAE 75w/140, 1.7 litres req'd) = £30
2nd Inspection 2
Oil Filter (11 42 7 833 769) = £15
Oil (Mobil One 0w/40) = £30
Valve Shims = £7ea
Spark Plugs (6x NGK PKR7A-3641) = £50
Air Filter (13 12 1 730 449) = £25
Coolant Change
Coolant (3x 83 19 2 211 191 makes 11.25 litres, 8.6 litres req'd) = £30
Deionised Water (6.75 litres to mix with 4.5 litres of Coolant) = £5
Brake Fluid Change
Brake Fluid (1 litre DOT 4) = £5
or
Brake Fluid (1 litre DOT 5.1) = £12
I use BMW parts or the approved lubricants. Cheaper alternatives are available, and I'm sure that many will tell you that they are just as good with regard to quality. I only use parts supplied by BMW unless I can see PROOF that a lubricant or a part is approved by BMW, or I can see PROOF that a part is manufactured by the original supplier to the original specification. Others will tell you that motor factor parts and oil is good enough, but that's another debate.
