hello all and a happy new year.
i'm not yet a z3 owner but hopefully that will change in the next few weeks/months.
i'm after advice on which model to get?
before I go any further my budget is 3k max so I know it will be an older z3,but its not going to be my daily runner,more of a sunny weekend toy.
so i'm after a convertible but which is best, 1.9 4cyl or 2.0 6cyl?
also anything to avoid or equally is a must?
do they have an a/b or major and minor service and roughly how much are they?

sorry for all the questions (but there will be lots more)
just trying to gain as much info as possible so a cheap z3 doesn't turn in to the most expensive car I ever buy lol

Happy New Year and welcome. I have had a 2.0 6 cylinder for nearly 15 years so I would recommend it, in my opinion sounds great and pulls really well. That said I have heard the 2.2 and that sounds even better. That is only my opinion and as you will see opinion varies widely.

You should be able to pick up an older 2.8 for that, which is what i would go for.

I started looking for a 2.0ltr thinking the bigger engines would be much heavier on fuel, however, after a bit of study all of the 6 cylinder engines have similar fuel consumption stats; so don't be put off the bigger engines. The 4 cylinder engines are more fuel efficient and somewhat slower. As a weekend car I would go for a 2.8ltr which with your budget you should be able to get a good one. Check that all of the warning lights on the dash go off quickly (if any stay on for a short time longer that the rest it may indicate that there are stored code - check them out before buying).

I wanted an individual so it narrowed the options down when I was looking

you will not regret getting a Z3 no matter which model you go for. We all tell each other how our own model is the best one to pick.
By the way get a facelift 2.8 ...they are the best, especially in Silver.

Lived on the estate just off Park Lane, but in Telford now, not too far if your ever passing.

Hi and welcome . I opted for a 2.8. It to is a sunny day car only and I am more than happy with my choice. Plenty of go if you want it, sounds lovely and it returns excellent mpg for an engine of its size. But as others have said, whichever you end up with there great fun and I'm sure you'll be more than happy.

On eBay at the minute with more details

I have a 1.9 and find it plenty quick enough on the country roads around the peak district

I've got a 1.9 and find it fine but I'd recommend you getting one with the biggest engine your funds allow. A 6 pot 2.0 litre is a nice car to drive and on UK A & B roads, typically driven in the 30 - 70 mph zone, it has more than enough speed, BHP and torque to satisfy most.

I got my 2.0l first and love it - and to be honest, when driven hard it is more than powerful enough for some very fun driving...!! and the MPG is good at around 33mpg.

However, after realising that I was going to be keeping it for a long time I began to wish that I had known more about them when I first bought it and gone for one of the bigger engines.... hence the Z3M sat next to it. Shop around... there was someone on here selling a Z3M for around 5K not long back - check through the stock exchange
